I see your distinction, but even 1337 has an upper compensation limit (ignoring situation where you're early employee / founder of co. w/ successful exit) because you'd generally expected to be the person to produce the work product.

What you really want to be is an incredible ARCHITECT, which allows you to just design shit and then monkeys write the code. Much more scalable in terms of compensation.

1337 c0d3r can just work 10 hours a week and pull $200k. Pretty chill.

You probably have to have a CS / Math / etc. background, but a lot of good architects hie away from coding as early as possible and shift into positions where they just design systems and don't write a line of anything.

Better to have a specific skill that has a bunch of mandatory, "make work" regulations that keep you in demand.

Can easily be off-shored, or now commonly sent to fly-over offices (e.g. Salesforce INDIANAPOLIS). Again, some regulatory requirement that due to it's nature has to be done w/in US is optimal.
