Worth it to take this start up offer?

Recently got an offer for a 50% raise (TC is 180 without factoring in equity). It’s a very well funded crypto company (some funding guys are big players). Report directly to the CCO and would have primarily handle one aspect I’m an expert at but they want me to do a tons of other stuff. General Counel and CCO have good backgrounds. However, the CEO mentioned it’s a role up your sleeves type of job.
My current job is very chill and just promoted me. I’m lower in title but have some influence (we just have a two person team and our department is really growing now). Maybe 20 hours of work per week. Manager doesn’t do anything for weeks and just scrambles at the last second. It’s frustrating but mostly chill. But have really good relationships at this place, especially for only being there a year. It’s a step down prestige wise from my last job which I was laid off from but I’m fairly happy here. Also, I’ve left my last couple jobs under 2 year (one for a great company and other laid off).
It first took the interview bc I was curious. Then it really ramped up at the end. CEO took over the offer process and keep talking about “what it would take to close me.” I said this # would be a big step. Now I’m just not sure this is the move. Is it worth leaving for somewhere like that. Lots of opportunity to grow but the CEO just seems idk not chill. Money also wouldn’t hurt (we are a fam of 3 in a major city).

$120k seems like less than you'd want to be making for a family of 3 in a major city though

I’m very content at the chill job. Just do nothing basically and hang out with 1 year old a lot during the day. Only thing is the company isn’t taking on any crypto clients right now and that my thing.
I just got a level change and a raise. It was from 115 to 120. Not sure if they would do it again like 2 months later. Was really hoping for a much bigger jump |

but if it's just a function of it being a totally unambitious company then i'd still stay. again i can't pretend to know what you're like but this sounds like a move that i'd totally regret. just $60k is not enough for ditching a job that doesn't require work for one that does. |

1. you will almost certainly be overworked and will want to leave after six or so months
2. the equity is worthless
3. they’re probably committing fraud or something similar. their GC is either oblivious or more likely supporting this
4. CCO is usually a shit leadership position that gets cut in layoffs |

Date: February 23rd, 2025 6:36 AM Don’t think they are doing anything illegal. It’s not a coin but an exchange backed by some legit people and not focused on retail customers. But that def true about 99% of crypto companies, including the “reputable” ones.
- yea I feel you on that. I feel like I could be overworked. The other person with my title said she logs off at 6 but the CEO just gave me such a bad vibe. “No tolerance for mediocrity” “ roll up sleeves”
Im in my late 30s and hoping this could be a fast track to better paying jobs in the future. Not really a big $$ person usually but have a fam and it’s expensive. Said I’d prob take it after being pressed, but idk may ask for some additional conversations. |

shitcoin companies burn out their employees and then churn through new retards. it might pay well, but it won’t pay anything when you get laid off within a year. |

Work in crypto compliance. Making 120k after getting laid off. It was a step back financially but I’ve never made a ton of money.

The equity question is more about whether they're allocating against a dollar amount or on the basis of how much of the company you'd own. You're far enough down the ladder that it probably doesn't matter either way. But series A and B, a % based allocation is more the norm.
I would look at this solely as an opportunity to add major areas of responsibility and resume points quickly and then leave within about 2 years to be a CCO yourself for real CCO pay (low to mid 300s base, 40%+ bonus, meaningful equity, etc). Don't make this a long term pit stop or you'll regret it |
