Instate at UCLA or Berkeley is easily under 50k all in. Assume it's comparable or even cheaper at instate flagships in most states. Out of state and private colleges are far more expensive. 90-100k all in for elite Ivies.
Your 600k HHI friends probably already have most of college funded in 529s. Ours currently will pay half the tuition at the 900-100k schools (and still have four years left till eldest hits college) and I'll cash flow the rest from income. College for the 500k+ brackets is eminently manageable. It's the 250-400k bracket who get hit the hardest, no financial aid but typically not as much savings nor time to build up the savings.

See my analysis below. Either your friends are exaggerating or they are funding extreme baller lifestyles. I don't think there is a single public school in the country where you should be paying more than $50k per year if you are in-state. You might exceed the $50k barrier if you are paying out-of-state tuition, but it still won't be $90k per year.

Most people get student loans, need based aid, and scholarships. Didn’t you go to college?

I think the college market is bullshit. It just doesn't make sense that you have to get a 1590 SAT score with a 4.6 GPA in order to pay $90,000 to go to UC Santa Barbara.

How the fuck is it even possible to spend $90k per year for a mid-tier state school? I believe William and Mary has the highest in-state tuition in the country at $23k per year. The University of Michigan has the highest out-of-state tuition in the country at about $47k per year. To spend $90k per year, you would need to pay sticker at Michigan and then $43k+ per year on living expenses. If you are in-state, then you would need to be spending $67k+ per year on living expenses.
Most likely this is flame. But if you are actually spending $90k per year at a mid-tier public school, you only have yourself to blame for being such a stupid goy. I'm not sure how that is even possible unless your kid is living alone in a luxury apartment while eating out, shopping, and partying every night.
