My kids are young so I haven't really thought about college affordability. My friends (all professionals, like 600k HHI) with older kids are saying they pay rack rate for college, so like 90k per year for mid tier state schools. I always thought those numbers were fake news and no one actually paid them except foreign students. That amount is fuckin nuts and it's hard to believe that middle classmos like us can afford that for one kid, let alone multiple.

$600k a year for 20 years is $12 million, so paying $360k over 4 years out of that fat wad should be no problem.

Instate at UCLA or Berkeley is easily under 50k all in. Assume it's comparable or even cheaper at instate flagships in most states. Out of state and private colleges are far more expensive. 90-100k all in for elite Ivies.

Your 600k HHI friends probably already have most of college funded in 529s. Ours currently will pay half the tuition at the 900-100k schools (and still have four years left till eldest hits college) and I'll cash flow the rest from income. College for the 500k+ brackets is eminently manageable. It's the 250-400k bracket who get hit the hardest, no financial aid but typically not as much savings nor time to build up the savings.

My friends gave me the 90k figure for the state schools their kids are attending, which are "good" but not Berkeley caliber. I took them at their word and didn't check online until now. 90k isn't congruent with the figures on the school websites. Maybe they're funding baller lifestyles at the same time.

To be clear, I am also a 600k HHImo, and while I could probably cover 50k per year without much pain, 100k becomes a stretch. Who the fuck is paying this?

See my analysis below. Either your friends are exaggerating or they are funding extreme baller lifestyles. I don't think there is a single public school in the country where you should be paying more than $50k per year if you are in-state. You might exceed the $50k barrier if you are paying out-of-state tuition, but it still won't be $90k per year.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. If paying for college is a stretch for the 600k, W2 wagie smoldering remains of the middle class, how the hell is the reddit tier managing any of this? Is literally everyone poorer than me just yoloing and praying for debt forgiveness?

I think the college market is bullshit. It just doesn't make sense that you have to get a 1590 SAT score with a 4.6 GPA in order to pay $90,000 to go to UC Santa Barbara.

How the fuck is it even possible to spend $90k per year for a mid-tier state school? I believe William and Mary has the highest in-state tuition in the country at $23k per year. The University of Michigan has the highest out-of-state tuition in the country at about $47k per year. To spend $90k per year, you would need to pay sticker at Michigan and then $43k+ per year on living expenses. If you are in-state, then you would need to be spending $67k+ per year on living expenses.

Most likely this is flame. But if you are actually spending $90k per year at a mid-tier public school, you only have yourself to blame for being such a stupid goy. I'm not sure how that is even possible unless your kid is living alone in a luxury apartment while eating out, shopping, and partying every night.

also good state schools like MI are 180 bc the school has to take a certain number of ppl from the state, and if you are poor you can basically go there for free if you do well enough in high school (not even on the tests, just graduating high in your high school)

cr, $90k for a mid-tier state school is insane. You'll get way more for your $90k at a small liberal arts college.
