I can think of two reasons, both due to North Carolina state laws. First, Charlotte has a dynamic economy for many reasons, but perhaps the main one has been banking. Decades ago, North Carolina had state laws that did not protect small-town banks from being acquired by larger state-wide banks, so larger, aggressive banks developed in Charlotte. When federal laws changed to allow nationwide banks, the Charlotte banks were poised to gobble up banks in other states. The best example is what was once North Carolina National Bank, which in just a few years acquired other banks to become Bank of America, the largest bank in the county. All that money flowing from other states into Charlotte ignited the local economy.
The second reason is North Carolina has very liberal annexation laws that have made it easy for cities to gobble up surrounding suburban areas. So unlike say Atlanta, where the actual City of Atlanta (which has population smaller than Charlotte) is hemmed in by surrounding suburban cities, Charlotte has been able to spread out to take in most surrounding (and affluent) suburbs.
I learned all of this in classes at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

No but I did hear my mom having sex with her boyfriends on a number of occasions. I remember pretty clearly once when I was ten years old, I woke suddenly in the night feeling something was wrong. I got out of bed and snuck down the stairs. I could hear my mom in her bedroom. I crept over and knelt by the door. She was moaning and saying “Oh god, oh fuck yeah, oh baby, oh fuck, don’t stop, don’t stop.” My breathing became rapid and shallow as I continued to listen. I felt afraid and excited. After a while I heard her bed squeaking and she was moaning loudly and there her boyfriend was moaning too. Then the bed stopped squeaking and I could hear her boyfriend saying “Oh god baby, yeah, oh yeah.” Then he groaned deeply and things got quiet. I got scared and ran back up the stairs. My thirteen year old sister was at the top of the stairs. “What are you doing?” she whispered. “Nothing” I whispered back. “You little sneaky shit.” she said. “Do you know what they were doing? They were fucking. Fucking. Do you know what fucking is?” I had some idea but I wasn’t really clear on everything so I kept quiet. “If mom ever finds out what your doing she’ll kill you” my sister said. “God you’re such a sneaky stupid little shit.” I went back to bed but I couldn’t sleep. I was very excited about what I had heard and very curious. I suppose that was the beginning of my sex education.
