Much of it has to do with certain aspects of our political system that early Progressives addressed and attempted to address before all of the mission creep endemic to the decline and fall of that movement took place. Lobbying, phenomena around term limits, public-private linkages and their troublesome opacity, the way federal and state contracts are disbursed, things like legislator salaries, and a general "who watches the watchmen?" set of issues regarding oversight.
