At the beginning of the movie, the McCallisters order pizza–a lot of pizza—from the fictional Little Nero’s pizzeria. It’s a big family, which calls for a big order. In the movie, the cost for the pizza totals up to $122.50.

Adjusted for inflation, that’s around $230. Talk about extra cheese—that’s a lot of mozzarella.

Pizza cost more in the 90s than it does now for some reason. It used to cost a fortune to order pizza hut, now you can shrewdly use internet coupons. A Dominos pizza is cheaper than a quarter pounder meal irl.

food/groceries in general has gotten cheaper. Chain pizza carry-out deals are some of the cheapest calories you can procure if not cooking yourself.

this is one of the reasons why the Fed insists there is no inflation. food and gas are both relatively cheap. so uhm... no inflation. move on.

To be fair, I don't think they had "delivery fees" back then, which is just a money grab by the franchise (since the drivers still need their own car and don't get paid any of that money), but yeah, that sounds about right.

There's a fan theory that actually the family not only intended to leave Kevin behind but also have him killed during a "robbery" by hitmen Marv and Harry.

The family "arranged" things on the night before the departure to make sure that Kevin ended up alone in a separate attic room, so that he could be "forgotten." Notice the tricks they used. Warning him that Fuller pees the bed. Fuller drinking the Coke and grinning at Kevin. Everyone being mean to Kevin and making him feel isolated. Then staging the argument so that Kevin gets in trouble and is sent away.

Marv and Harry were hired to kill him, but they had to make it look like a robbery gone wrong, which is why they were breaking into nearby homes and turning on the faucets. If Kevin was found dead in a home with a running faucet, the police would just think it was the Wet Bandits and another botched robbery.

The parents then had to put on a big show in public of being "concerned" when they realized Kevin was "left behind." It's why they made a scene in the airport and made sure to put in calls to the police, documenting their concerns.

When the mom got home she literally expected Kevin to be dead. That's why she's so surprised to see him.

But anyway they bought all that extra pizza so that Kevin would have food to live on until Marv and Harry got to him. Wouldn't want him to die of neglect instead of murder, since that would fall on the parents.

btw, Home Alone has spawned an amateur critical literature unlike any other film except for maybe the Shining. And like the Shining's, it offers countless rabbit holes concerning secret meanings and various forms of interpretation (social-critical, genre manipulation, etc.). some of the theories verge on the conspiratorial, but many are critically interesting and worth spending some time on. though I should point out I have a friend who's doing his doctoral thesis on the forms that Home Alone exegesis have taken in the last decade, and he says you can lose your life in it. some people have. so take it with a word of caution. but for those interested check out "Home Alone: Reinterpretations" (2001, Johnson and Vickers), "Home Alone and Freud" (2003, Maundebaum), "Kevin McCallister As Edvard Munch's Screaming Existential Everyman" (2007, Donovan et al), and "Home Alone and Eyes Wide Shut: the Treatment of Domestic Disturbance in American Film" (2011, Ailes).

I don't know, friend, I hover around a million dollars nw (aka XO poverty but IRL upper class) and take European vacations with my CGWBT. I still usually pick up food for $10 rather than having it delivered for $20.

we're not talking doubling the price of a single pie and 2 liter. this was a feast of over $100. at that price point, saving 5% is silly. they're all flying to paris. can't risk a crash or a ticket or an armed robbery the night before.

Pizza used to be more expensive. Little Caesars is like half the price what it was 20 years ago. And let's be real, they're in Winnetka ordering NY style pizza, they are EXACTLY the type of people ordering some garbage little caesars delivery

Lil Ceasers introduced 5 dollar hot and ready 20 years ago. Little ceaser aside, most chains are significantly cheaper than 1990 but smaller places are expensive as fuck now

It was $12 a pizza with the tax built in, prob bc ppl paid in cash back then, and I guess a $2.50 delivery fee. Not that crazy considering all the toppings they got. The pizza place prob had some deal where it was up to 2-3 toppings for the $12 rather than charging for each one individually. That's why they only got one plain cheese bc it was a rip off by comparison.

Considering they're also in a yuppie area it's not that expensive. Those pizzas would probably be like $25 today.

my family always picked up pizza and i assume that was the reason why. First time I recall ever getting delivery was in 7th grade when I got a pizza hut stuffed crust cheese pizza which I think was also like $12. I don't remember if they charged a delivery fee.

fan theory on the father as well. When he meets Pesci as the cop he opens with "am I under arrest?" which is an odd response. Plus they never mention what he did for a living which clearly paid well.

Pesci pretending to be a cop and going around to every house so they could identify him later made no sense as well.
