There is something inherently wonderful about both remaining players sitting across computers from one-another completely unable to build advantage or win against the other opponent because the first phase of the 6-player game took more than 1 hour.

Both players must have spent dozens or more hours learning how to engage in intricate cardblocks/evasions for a board game made originally to be played casually. And then, to employ those skills over hours in a completely meaningless game merely to "win".

The average age of players is remarkably high at that level, so its likely two 35+ year old men are playing each other.

I have never, ever seen a two-person risk stalemate and I have played a lot. each player is incentivized to weaken the other as much as possible at all times. plus there is a probablistic advantage to the attacker as long as he has enough armies to roll 3 dice, so both players have an incentive to make the first big move. A stalemate necessarily requires a third player. Most games end quickly once the the third player is out in my experience.

The ONLY way a two player game can stalemate is if both players were dumb enough to leave their main armies trapped behind their own territories, but your post implies that we are talking about experienced players. At that point, if they are playing under rules that limit how many armies can be "moved" per turn, one player could continuously attack the moved armies down to 1, but not take the territory, and that would keep a large accumulation of usable armies from happening. The only time this would make sense is if the boxed-in player has more armies, but the attacker is getting more armies per turn. I haven't ever seen this happen for hours though. The player on the losing end of the attrition will concede.

well, have you played a lot of progressive capitals? we are talking about a time when both players enter the 1v1 with 7k+ troops and each typically hold 2-3 capitals. cardblocking is typically the manner of defeat here but on maps where the territory count is under 50 its much more challenging. My last stalemate was Classic Map, I held capitals in China, Greenland, opponent had capitals in Australia, South Am, and West Africa.

this is also more likely when there is a large bot (5k+ troops) occupying 1/3rd of the board and too big to kill.

if you are experienced in playing fixed cards then your post makes sense, even normal progressive makes my scenario impossible, so add capitals (3 defending dice) and if you play the current Risk my situation is also slightly more likely with true random dice rather than balanced blitz.

At that point with different maps and so many rule changes it isn't really even "Risk" anymore. I've never even heard of "capitals."

I am familiar with Risk strategy on a normal map, could have fog of war on or off, cards could be fixed or escalating. In those scenarios, a lengthy two-way stalemate is very unlikely. A three-way will happen all the time with fixed cards, and occasionally with escalating cards.

here you can watch a most of a 3 hour game that turned int a multi-party stalemate

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2312558273

the elegance of this video is the use of a bot card farm by blue. he later moves troops to force the other bot into slamming 3k troops into the player that held 90% of the map.

I'll add something else, the "trick" at the end was only physically possibly with a "free scroll mouse" otherwise its not possible to move 3k+ troops in a single turn mechanically.

My favorite memory of playing risk was declaring that the first person who enters into my territory, I would attack recklessly without regard for winning the game. I lost that game but also weakened that opponent so much that they lost too. The next game I said the same thing and then went on win streak until they got together and said they can't let me get away with it
