Thinking it would be nice to take my kids to the park on the back of a chill e-bike but I know nothing of the brands or quality. Anybody have experience with these?

They’re 180billion if you get a good one. They’ll burn your house down and immolate your family if you get a crappy one. So like most things these days.

What’s your budget and use case? With this, I’ll make some recommendations.

Thanks brother.

Use case is relatively light weekend use for fun joy rides with my kids back and forth between parks. Boys are 3 months and 18 months so only the older one could ride with me right now. I do live in a hilly area so I need enough power to get up and down hills but I will not be using it as a daily commuter bike.

Budget is like 2-3000

In your shoes I would get a cargo bike that’s designed to be able to carry kids, their playground gear, and picnicking supplies.

If you’re looking to stay on the lower side of your budget, I would get an Aventon Abound. They’re nicely made bikes and have a good selection of accessories to haul kids. The downside is that their dealer network is limited. They mostly sell direct to consumer and local bike shops can sometimes be unwilling to work on e-bikes because the off-brand ones can be so janky. Their network has gotten better though, and if there’s one in your area this is a no brainer. https://www.aventon.com/products/abound-ebike?variant=42319517515971

If you aren’t keen on doing your own bike maintenance and there is more limited bike shop support in your area, then I’d get something like a Specialized Haul ST. Same general format. Great for hauling kids and their gear. https://www.specialized.com/us/en/haul-st/p/277759?color=442436-277759&searchText=91023-8100U

To round things out you’ll want some accessories to enable hauling both kids and gear. https://www.aventon.com/collections/bike-trailers

I agree the 3 month old is a ways off from being able to ride in a seat or a trailer. I would get a Thule Yepp seat for the 18th month old, who will be able to switch to riding in the cargo basket about the time the 3 month old is ready for the seat.

They are almost all set up like that. The other way to use it is straight throttle (you push a button and go, don't have to pedal at all) and not all models have that. Ideally you want one with both modes.

I'm not an expert on the full universe of e-bikes, but I got a Cityrun from HeyBike recently, and I have been very happy with it:

https://www.heybike.com/products/heybike-cityrun-electric-bike

It comes with both a front and rear basket that are perfect for a small load of groceries or a takeout order. It has pretty much replaced my car for short trips around town.

Are you an urbanmo who wants a convenient transportation tool and the bike’s size and storage matter? Or are you a suburbanmo who doesn’t care about storing a full size bike and just wants something to cruise around at moderate efforts, which eliminates most of the excuses around choosing a car over the bike.

I've had a Raleigh Lore for several years. https://imgur.com/zHpwfT4 Have other bikes, too, but this is the only electric. It makes me feel like Superman to ride it. It's a "pedalec," so it only gets boost if you pedal - no throttle. 28 mph top speed. In a regular ride I can average 22 mph for about the same effort as 13 mph on a non-electric hybrid. Very good for steep hill climbing, which is where I have been riding it mostly lately. I like the hub mounted motor. Negatives are that it's heavy and can be difficult to load and unload into the bed of a raised pickup. Also, the weight distribution feels weird, and it does not feel terribly agile or encourage throwing it around in any way whatsoever. It's a great way to ride 20-30 miles without feeling too tired, and it's the only bike I can use cross country on the farm, up and down steep unpaved hills. Not much of an advantage over a lighter non-electric bike in short, flat neighborhood rides. There are probably better choices out there now, but overall I like it. Cost about $3K after hefty discount off MSRP.
