Cr, because the vast majority of those those jobs aren't being onshored, they will just disappear due to economic inviability and we'll all be worse off (unless they're automated away)

You are insane -- literally insane -- if you are not building some kind of a business for your kids.
The alternatives are all awful.

if these jobs are being done by robots vs. chink slave labor then we should onshore them. that seems like a no brainer. you still have to have engineers, facilities, etc to run this shit. rather employ 100 humans vs. 1000 chinese.

just do rely on communist forced labor camps in perpetuity or have apple make a little less money than all of Europe every year while America gets richer a a whole. really tough choice.

america doesn't get richer as a whole, though, it gets poorer as a whole, because the cost of goods will go up faster than wages. deadweight loss. even smart tariff supporters don't claim it would make america richer as a whole...they just see it as economic welfare for people in manufacturing jobs in the lower rungs of the supply chain.
this board is full of innumerate lawyers unable to grasp second-order effects.

The premise that it's all captured by the owner class is wrong. Higher consumer goods prices hurt poors more than they hurt the owner class, since poors spend twice as much of their income on goods as the wealthy do. And lost manufacturing jobs in upstream industries such as the construction and airplane industry (lumber, copper, steel, aluminum tariffs) hurt lower-middle-class blue-collar types.
And that's before factoring in the retaliatory tariffs that destroy jobs by killing exports like airplanes and soybeans.

in 2023, the richest 10% of households also saved 26% of their pre-tax income and spent 38% on services, leaving just 13% to be spent on goods. The bottom 90% saved just 2% of their income and devoted a proportionately smaller share of their spending to services, so that they ended up spending 28% of their pre-tax income on goods. If tariffs are levied as a flat-rate import tax on goods, and assuming the import share of goods consumption is the roughly the same for rich and poor, the percent of pre-tax income paid as tariffs by the poorest 90% of households would be more than twice as high, (that is to say in a ratio of 28% to 13%), compared to the top 10%.
