no idea but I wouldn't count feral blacks or illegals, I don't think very many umc white people try to pull chicago off with no car, I've certainly never known one whereas most people I've known in nyc go car free

Is that true? I keep hearing people saying the transit is actually better than NYC (or at least less crowded?)

Brother we're all like 42 now most of us haven't lived in "cities" for a decade

To answer your question though unless you're young NYC is the only city in America where you won't miss a car. Even places like Chicago, Boston, etc. are pretty limited in that you're mostly restricted to whatever transit line you're closest to, which isn't bad if you're 23 and live nearby friends but gets far more annoying with age.

it's technically *possible* to do it in chicago, if you choose an apt shrewdly, agree to ride the bus (which no one in our socioeconomic group does), and take frequent ubers. it's really not common though, outside of students, broke redditors, and people trying to do it to prove a point or whatever. most people have a car even if they ride the el to work. if car free is important to you nyc is a tier above

You can live car free in every big city if you are willing to just take Ubers everywhere.

I know people there who do it (a married couple). They live in downtown and rely on transit / Ubers / their feet to get where they need to go.

Fair enough. I really do think NYC is the best choice car free. But yeah with a shrewd apt location, and either an easy commute (or remote), near grocery stores (or lots of good delivery), and willingness to take a lot of Ubers, I guess you could do it someplace like Chicago, Boston, Seattle, Miami Beach

Large parts of Boston, Philly, and SF are accessible car free. You sacrifice some but it’s not like you can’t go anywhere like Houston.
