"People of color, especially women, have long struggled with racist tropes about smoke detector batteries," said Shaniqua Jackson, an attorney with the Black Legal Fund.
"As a symbol of our resistance, we will be taking batteries out of smoke detectors nationwide at midnight tonight," she added as a loud chirp echoed across her office.
