A mushroom forager who entered a wooded area has been found dead in a tragic incident, with his head severed from his body after what authorities believe was a fatal bear attack.

The victim, reportedly in his 70s, disappeared on Wednesday after setting out to collect mushrooms in Iwate, Japan. Search teams located his body, which showed claw marks indicating a bear attack.

A police officer from the northern Iwate region stated following the deadly mauling: "A man in his 70s who went missing after going into the woods to harvest mushrooms was found dead. We suspect he was attacked by a bear based on scratch marks."

TV Iwate, a local news outlet, reported that the victim's head and torso had been separated, strengthening officials' conclusion that this was a fatal bear encounter.

This tragedy occurs against a backdrop of increasing bear attacks throughout Japan in recent years, sparking significant safety worries for those residing near woodland regions, reports the Express.

In another case, a second man also in his 70s was discovered deceased in a separate area of Iwate on the same Wednesday. Additionally, on Saturday, authorities found the body of a 78-year-old man with numerous claw marks in Nagano, a central prefecture.

Data from Japan's environment ministry reveals that between April and September this year, bears injured 103 people nationwide.

In an unusual incident, an agitated bear was seen roaming through the aisles of a supermarket in Gunma, north of Tokyo, on Tuesday. The animal injured two men and caused panic among numerous shoppers.

Local residents pointed out that, despite the store's close proximity to mountainous areas, bears had never before been reported venturing anywhere near the location.

Last year, also in Gunma prefecture on the island of Honshu, a black bear broke into an elderly couple's home while they were sleeping, causing severe injuries to their faces and heads.

In Akita prefecture, also on Honshu, a 64-year-old man was fatally attacked while foraging for bamboo shoots in May. Officers who attempted to recover his body were then confronted by the bear and had to retreat.

Bears, which are primarily vegetarian and feed on insects, have reportedly acquired a taste for meat due to Japan's rapidly expanding deer population.

Hunting once controlled their numbers, but with fewer hunters active today, those who remain often leave carcasses in the mountains, providing an easy meal for hungry bears.

It is also believed that the heavy summer rainfall of 2023, followed by an extended drought, severely affected the fruit harvest and insect population that bears rely on before hibernation.

The scarcity of food is widely regarded as a key factor pushing these animals to search for sustenance in new areas, including near human settlements, where attacks have been increasingly reported.

Yasushi Fujimoto, the head of a hunting organization, said: "The mountain is turning into a restaurant for bears, because of the remains left on the mountain after hunting.

"The lack of professional hunters, like park rangers in Alaska financed by the government, is a problem when it comes to controlling the number of bears."
