It's just an Extra Button imo. In Metroid maybe it brings up the map or something. I see a lot of Eastern games are oriented towards using the face buttons to do most things like it's the year 2000 whereas westerners want to feel like they're playing Halo so it's dual analog all the time + shoulder buttons for critical inputs with face buttons being for incidental stuff like opening doors. Switch being an Eastern console, they probably felt inclined to add another face button. After all, the Saturn had 6. N64 had 6!
