You need to know brands/models of tire, and you need to know how to measure wear and also identify tires that are shit (bulges in sidewall, multiple repairs can be an issue, smoothness of tread, evenness of wear). You actually need a bit of experience with tires, or someone to teach you. For 60/apiece mounted and balanced you can have a really high-end brand with very little wear for 240 if you pay cash. |

I mean yeah as a percentage I guess if a Thai tire will go for 50 maybe a really nice Michelin will be 60. But in general 60-70 is what you'll pay for a seriously nice bridgestone/Michelin etc, and first act like youre only buying one- and if theyre like "thats 70" then say "ill buy 4 for 230 cash" or something. My best tires ever were a set of Bridgestone run-flats with 90% tread that I got for 60 apiece including mount/balance. If you're not a tire MFE then at the very least you can use MSRP online as a pretty good proxy for quality. You're gonna need some training to spot tire problems though. However you can also just get lucky and the tires you buy have no real problems. But at the very least examine the inside wall for lacerations (which will happen if the tire was driven flat for more than a few miles, esp if it's a cheap tire) and examine sidewall and track for bumps. If there are bumps DO NOT BUY. They will get blown out like that faggot EPAH.

A good rule of thumb right now is that Goodyear only makes decent tires. They don't make the shitty walmart models anymore. Michelin plays all kinds of games now, like selling knock-offs at Costco and online tire shops. I would only buy the French-made MXV4s if they still make those, and you have to find a dealer and make sure they weren't made in Indonesia. All Bridgestones are loud but the Blizzaks are 180 in the winter. |

In the past I kept a separate set of winter tires, and they lasted so long I still have them sitting around 15 years later (all-seasons would last a lot longer too since I wasn't using them from November - March).
