Holidays we have whatever’s traditional. Turkey, rib roast, etc. For friends I grill a lot of the time, usually steak but sometimes chicken. My wife will always make a huge salad plus a roast vegetable and a starch. Sometimes we mix it up. Made a salt crusted snapper last time that was a hit. I like to make homemade gnocchi occasionally. Nothing crazy.

as they should, a second formal dining space was always supposed to be an extravagence for the wealthy, if you're biulding a new house with an entire room just for a table you won't use you're an idiot

I am thankful to be spared all the dinner invites I'd have suffered in the 1950s.

The decline of formal dining is because modern culture doesn't celebrate formality. It wasn't the case for previous generations where formality went hand in hand with growing up and people genuinely embraced formality as tastemakers. Add to it that modern HVAC systems means kitchens are no longer smelly places and people don't cook the same as they did in the past with simmering pots of cabbage for multiple hours, so we don't need to close them up any more.

I think it mostly just that they were bored, you have to fill the hours somehow and if you leave a woman alone at home for weeks on end she will eventually insist on entertaining

now people just meet up with couples at a restaurant

The bored housewife of the 50s-60s was always more fiction than reality but the previous generation really did value having nice china and silver and being formal with it. Even working class women wanted their own china and silver. But you're right that these days it's all meeting up at clubs or restaurants.

It's also a testament to the changing perception of women and how they perceive status. I still struggle to see how we've evolved from the blond and frilly ideals of the 1950s to the heavily tattooed and deliberate uglification ideals of 2024.

I've got a fancy set of china from an older female relative from this era, she had like 12 of them, it was the only status symbol women could compete with, invite the other ladies over and stun them with your china mail ordered from MOTHERFUCKING CHINA

Nearly all of the Jews I know -- and I know a lot of Jews -- are not orthodox and essentially don't practice the Jewish religion in any meaningful way.

I get the sense that the Orthodox stick to their own.

I converted mine into a kids' playroom. Formal dining rooms are retarded when the space is worth > $1,500 / sqft.
