Because in my 45 years on this earth my relationship with the Feds has been limited to paying income taxes and getting passports. Yes, this is a simplification, am aware Feds to more than just man the passport offices but most Americans "see" the Feds via taxes, social security and medicare/medicaid and as long as those aren't changing, they're not going to "feel the effect" of major restructuring and changes to the Fed bureaucracy. If you don't work for the Feds, what are you going to "feel" as a result of laying off half the workforce? Especially when the perception has long been that the bureaucracy can't /won't tell you anything (such as how did COVID happen).
I am ready to stand corrected in due time but if it turns out that 50-70% of the bureaucracy is laid off and it doesn't change anything meaningful, then we will learn a great deal from it. |

i ran to quote this poast and then remembered you're the one that made it. this really rings true to me. i'm certain that mass cuts like this are going to cause some problems and some of them are going to have to be walked back. however, the only two options are scorched earth or kicking the can down the lane. if the bureaucracy wasn't so resistant to reform and efficiency this type of disruption wouldn't be necessary.

Earlier this week one of the guests, forget his name but he's a 2way regular from Florida, guy with a cigar, Cuban American political advisor of some local fame I think. And he said Musk needed to move fast and advised him not to slow down because if he did, the bureaucratic resistance would kick in and everything would be undone. And he's right, if Musk gives an inch, we'd be back to the standard death by a thousand meetings that always kills reform and kicking the can down the road yet again. Every time I hear the screeching pundits - whether it's DOGE or Ukraine, it's forever the typical criticism but never a solution.
Am pretty sure the administration gamed it and is not worried about short term polling or or even congressional GOP disapproval or the inevitable missteps. Which is an advantage of not being up for reelection. They're betting on the long term, not day to day polling freakouts. At least I hope they are because this is the first time since the early 1990s that we're seeing serious attempts at reducing the deficit. If those DOD cuts go as implied, major game changer for America.

CEOs and governors are two of the best examples.
POTUS's main job is being being commander in chief of the military, and rarely do we elect someone with senior military experience. |
