Of course the ads still register on a subconscious level, so they're serving their purpose in that way, but 99% of the time if you ask me what a commercial was about 1 second after it ended I'll have no idea because I immediately went into my Rich Inner World.
Maybe that's the case for at least some of the people you think are mesmerized by the ads? They're actually just disengaging and thinking about something else? |

I have to admit that there is one group of people that I have never gotten along with throughout my entire life and it's people who watch TV in their free time. Not sports which is a specific event or putting on a movie but people who watch cable television. Doubly bad if they enthusiastically watch commercials. I have never gotten on with this type of person and it's always led to conflict. It's a surefire guarantee that we will not like each other or get along.
It's one thing to watch a show on Netflix or whatever but the cable TV thing where you're there for hours just sitting there staring blankly at the screen and they are so involved in it and people who get excited about commercials and know the actors in commercials is my #1 enemy in life. These types can never carry on a conversation about anything interesting. It's such a dead end personality type. And they will always grow to resent you for not being like them. They can't understand why you don't like watching TV as much as they do. It really bugs them.
Second on my hate list are foodies. Like OK great who doesn't like to go out to a nice restaurant now and again. But people who are destination eaters where food is the primary entertainment is another type I cannot entreat with. Almost all of these people also love sitting for hours and watching mindless TV. |

But if they're talking about random stuff, I'd agree with your interpretation, because that indicates that they're not engaged with what you're watching but are more engaged with the commercial than the conversation. |
