Jesus had a good point. You'd think God would want the Jews to make a real sacrifice, not a token gesture that narrowly conforms to contemporary legal code.

But look at how he chose to raise his argument: standing in the front of the Temple, purporting to teach Jewish law to these poor pilgims from all over the Roman empire, many of them illiterate slaves. He was trying to convert these people on the spot, usurping the Temple as his stage, right before Passover.

Think about this: how much of a pain in the ass would it be to transport a fucking lamb all the way to the temple? Are you going to bottle feed it along the way? The only way to make this a real sacrifice is for you to lug a whole little flock of sheep with you, so that you can have a lamb on demand when it comes time to make your sacrifice. You have to maintain that pastoralist tradition as you make your pilgrimage.

You also have to ask who were these people running the Temple at that time? What tribe did they hail from? When's the earliest they could plausibly claim to have appeared in the Levant? How plausibly could they claim to be real Jews in the first place?
