the major shift with oxycodone specifically was the creation of an opioid pain reliever that 1. didn't induce much of drowsiness of prior poppy-derivative drugs and 2. could be made from thebaine, although it's not unique in this. does that make it "prestigious"? i don't know, it revolutionized PM/emergency medicine for about a decade. that's pretty prestigious
it got a bad rap because america is a bastard country, pop culture relating to the pharmakon in the sTTTates is informed by satan, and the DEA is a nationwide slave-taking operation but if a patient ever actually has a need for it it is a godsend
most opioids are not actually that addictive if prescribed properly and are probably the most maligned drug class in the west. addiction exists in no small part from two factors: the perception of glamour in drug abuse and ignored/covered-up social and economic cataclysm
