Mike Zimmer was playing hybrid safeties at linebacker in the 2000s, just one of many examples. Now every team in college football does this, it's just a matter of who they classify as a safety vs a linebacker, a safety on one team is just a linebacker on another and vice versa. The alignments are all over the place now.
Also the base 4-4 has always been a common defensive alignment at the high school level. It's simple. I think Walz lives deep in the closet btw. |

I'm going to charitably assume that the right-most 'Z' receiver is actually on the line (because otherwise it's an illegal formation), and I'll also assume that the RB and QB aren't *actually* conjoined twins.
Let's also acknowledge that this is likely high school level football, so the strategy and execution are going to be dumbed down somewhat.
With that said, the 4-4 looks like a terrible defense against this formation. There's just so many ways to attack it.
Motion the TE across the line and have him come set off the line. Then throw a quick pass to the slot receiver. The 'X' is one-on-one with the CB. The TE chips the end to give the OT a second to get across the end's body, and the TE releases to the outside LB. Now you've got a slot receiver with a lane and a lot of traffic between him and most defenders. He's basically one-on-one with the safety. That's a simple 10 yard gain.
You could run a variation of this with the running back, in several different forms.
You could also pull the weakside guard into the 4 hole to act as a lead blocker; this defensive formation is taylor-made to be exploited that way. |
