I figured he would cave like he did with Mexico and Canada a few weeks ago, but he's hanging tough even after the stock bloodbath. And his plan is true to some extent - the world isn't just going to give up on the American marketplace, and if they were forced to build more here they will do so.
But re-building an industrial base takes decades, and I expect most will assume that the pain will become too great for the US and we will cave. Which we probably will. So I think most companies will just hunker down and ride out the storm.
But it appears that Trump plans to try for the next few months at least, which likely means a recession and an absolute bloodbath on Wall Street. Because the companies on the S&P are optimized around a globalized world, not a protectionist America.

Maybe, IF we had to political courage to make it work. I don't think we do. Like 8 Republican Senators have jumped ship already, and the Dems will likely take the House in 2026.
So I think we're going to get the short-term pain but not the long-term gain. Starting to think it will be the biggest economic own goal in US history.

No it isn't. It's going to destroy high-payung advanced manufacturing and knowledge worker jobs. Even things like auto and appliance plants will suffer.

Why didn’t his team use a better metric to calculate each country’s effective “trade barrier” rate? Making trade fair to promote reshoring of industry could work, but their formula using pure trade deficits for goods is absolute ass

1. they were so stupid and uniformed they actualy assumed other countries had HUGE tariff rates
2. once they actually looked at the data they realized places like vietnam are only 1.5% avg tariff, china only 2.5% even India only 5.5% they cldnt just replicate those tariff levels cause it was too low, in fact it prob was lower than what US charges china/vietnam for certain products
3. so they had some retard intern, who prob was indian, come up with this formula using chatGPT
4. retard trumpmos literally look at it and believe vietnam was charging US 94% or whatever

cr it's indefensible
like i said elsewhere i get the idea of maybe '2 can play dat game' on countries that have tariffs on us as a way to shock everyone into zero tariff
but this is the economic equivalent of greg stillson launching nukes

the US is unable to build a sigle high speed rail line given 10x the time and 20x the money as china. we will not build an "industrial base" even in decades, and the workers who aren't too fat and lazy to help try are being deported.

Well it was great outsourcing all the toxic industrial production far the hell away to garbage cans of the world. The entirety of east and southeast Asia constantly smells like a metal fire the air quality is so bad. But I guess we want those industries right back here.

A lot of companies will sit on the sidelines and hope Dems will come in and reverse this. But many others cannot afford to. They'll have to invest, and it may drag the sideliners along with them. Where the workers are though?
Chinese goods are being pumped out of factories all over the world so this stuff about Chinese exports are only 2% is not true.
