Their military capability is significantly diminished and more importantly the population’s appetite for further conflict isn’t there, hence Putin’s refusal to do another mobilization. But whether this is permanent is a different question.
Ukraine basically bore the vast majority of the burden of defeating Russia’s barbaric territorial ambitions. They inflicted a punishment on Russia that has likely protected the rest of the globe from Russian aggression in the near future. Why would we not reward Ukraine and why would we not work to put away Russian aggression for good? |

From what I have read, the most likely scenario is the following: Russia launches a false flag attack against some community in Poland or the Baltics with a large ethnic Russian population. Then Russia sends in a large force to that community as "peacekeepers," insisting the entire time that they respect the territorial integrity of Poland/Latvia/whoever and that they are just temporary peacekeepers to protect the poor Russian community from ethnic cleansing. Then they'll basically dare NATO to do something about it and threaten to launch their nukes if they do. Then NATO has to choose between two bad options: 1) Do nothing and basically admit to the world that they won't protect their allies even if they are treaty-bound to do so. That would mean the end of NATO, and likely the end of the U.S./Western dominated world order. 2) Attack the Russkies and risk World War 3.
