We're all comparing it to the greatest science fantasy epic of all time, which came together in many ways because of a lot of luck. The prequels are neither great nor objectively atrocious by a normal standard. It's a cohesive story that's pretty meh if taken on the whole but has several cool moments here and there. It's watchable, ok. You can sit down and watch it and your head won't explode.
By contrast the Disney ones are beyond absolute pure distilled dogshit. They are worse in every conceivable way. Utterly nonsensical, unwatchable trash. The prequels are not trash they're just not amazing. And they had a lot to live up to. I wouldn't say they're incompetent because I think the average serious Star Wars fan could easily summarize the main plot of the prequels while no one on Earth could tell you what the Disney ones are about. |

JJ Abrams is maybe defensible given his track record, but why do you just let Rian Johnson bring his own vision to Star Wars? He was coming off Looper which was a good movie, but he also made the Brothers Grimm right before that?
The Marvel approach seems much better where they basically picked the best storylines from like 10,000 comics, and then took the best directors from the minor movies to make the major movies.
The craziest part was not even having the directors talk to each other, so JJ Abrams set up a story in Episode 7 and then they just let Rian Johnson kill the big villain and destroy the story? And no one at Lucasfilm thought it might be a problem for Episode 9?
I honestly think its probably the dumbest Hollywood story of all time.
The Force Awakens made $2.1 billion. If they had properly set up the series the finale (like Marvel did) it should have made $2.5 billion. Instead it made $1.0 billion.
So they cost themselves $1.5 billion just in box office alone - not even counting the toys, the closed Disney hotel, etc - that all are lost because that trilogy sucked and they didn't even take the time to plot the fucking thing out... |

That was also why they couldn’t give the whole trilogy to a single director at the outset. Ep 8 had to be well into pre-production before 7 was finished |
