Sorry man. I know how stressful this is. This happened to my wife with our first. Even went to the ER. We were finally able to get an ultrasound with the OB a couple days later and … everything was fine.

9 years later the and the kid is happy, healthy, thriving, and a total pain in the ass some of the time.

Spotting probably isn’t a miscarriage unless she feels bad cramps as well. Call her doctor and ask if they want her to come in. Have you seen a heartbeat yet?

We had one miscarriage at about 7-8 weeks but then two healthy boys.

She hasn’t had bad cramps either which makes me hopeful.

Many OBs do it this way. You meet with a nurse just to see if you have questions and to go over stuff (testing options, prenatal vitamins, etc). You don't start getting heartbeat and belly checks until 10-12 weeks. Others do early ultrasounds, etc. Just depends on the practice. Most of the time if something's gonna go wrong early, you're not gonna catch it and/or there's not much you can do.

many medical practices do things contrary to the interest of the patients. i think they're often just busy and people call when they're 5-6 weeks pregnant (remember u dont even know ur pregnant until 4 weeks from the last LMP) and they cant get them in right away so they say, oh come in at 8-10 weeks.

i'm not an mfe but for our first kid, wife was low progesterone at like 6-7 weeks and they gave her supp progesterone. see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK362730/

kid is now almost 4 and fine. would the kid have maed it without the progesterone? who the fuck knows.

but i dont see why you wouldnt want care as early as possible.

I was scheduled for belly checks every 4 weeks once I hit 12 weeks, so scheduling was not an issue. The heartbeat often isn't even detectable before 10 weeks unless you do a transvaginal ultrasound, which many offices don't do as part of normal care. So there's nothing for the doctor to do.

I had two different OB practices between 3 pregnancies. The second practice offered it, which I happily accepted b/c I always like having extra info and wanted confirmation I wasn't having twins (I was high risk for that). The first didn't and generally it wasn't necessary. I always got pretty sick first trimester, so that was usually a good indicator things were progressing as expected.

You may not agree with the practice of not seeing the doctor until 10 weeks, but it's not uncommon. His wife is having an issue, and I'm sure they will find room to see her quickly.

i absolutely know it's common. i'm saying it's for the benefit of the office, not the patients.

most prenatal care is totally unnecessary if you're having a healthy, normal pregnancy. the point of prenatal care is to be on top of shit and look out for abnormal shit. and there's no good reason NOT to be seen before 10 weeks, and there's good reason TO be seen at 7-8 weeks.

idk we didnt call for an appointment immediately. OBGYN is backed up for a bit.

he is one of the top guys in the region and is head of obgyn clinic at a prestigious medical school and he said it was fine to come in at 10 weeks, i didnt have any reason to doubt that.

She should check in w the doctor just to be safe, but it's probably normal. If she's having any pain (especially in her lower abdomen) she should get seen right away. Could be ectopic.
