You see the old ads where they have eggs, bacon, bran muffin, cereal, a banana, a huge glass of orange juice. Had to be like 2000 calories all in. Was this a typical spread?

Because men used to do this, then go outside and randomly start copping trees, then drink scalding hot coffee while standing in a circle fist fighting. You can’t compare the two generations.

Every cereal box in the 80s and early 90s had a stock photo on the side of a bowl of cereal, a bigass stack of toast, a glass of milk, and a pitcher of OJ. No meat/protein.

Nobody ate complete breakfasts back then, companies were just legally required to put 'part of a complete breakfast' on their boxes of sugar cereal but kids just ate the sugar cereal.

It was industry self imposed following several 1970s government investigations into advertising to children with the bad thing being the suggestion that sugary cereal was nutritious.

But the photogenic classic spread and phrase “part of a complete breakfast” turned out to be very effective at convincing parents it was okay to let their kids eat Cocoa Puffs. The nutritious value of the pictured breakfast subliminally transferred to the unhealthy cereal.

It was evil, basically.

I’m not old enough to remember the 70s, but my sense has always been that the 80s were the first moment it broke through in the mass public monoculture that cholesterol was bad and caused heart attacks. But the food pyramid frauds who were pushing this knew better than to try to demonize steak and burgers directly, and that’s why they went all in against eggs (and bacon got kind of lumped in). It was a decade of boomers eating glycemic index spiking breakfasts like a bowl of shredded wheat, grape nuts or mueslix and feeling good about how healthy they were eating.

iirc correctly these "complete breakfasts" were commonplace until the mid 2000s when we were urged to "TRADE IN YOUR BREAKFAST FOR A DANNON FUSION SMOOTHAYYYYYY". That changed the game entirely.
