Yes! And you'd make up epic continuations and adventures without even realizing you'd done it, just because you're always then tiptoeing along the jagged precipice of the infinite chasms of pure play --- but if you were to try to catch the butterfly and freeze her in amber, you'd find naught but a tawdry dead bug.

I've noticed this as a grownup as well, kids have absolutely no way of telling whether a show is brand new or 40 years old.

I'm sure it's even harder now due to the slower rate of cultural and technological change and the sheer volume of stuff out there.

Looking back, as a kid in the 80s I could tell that cartoons from up to the mid-60s (Flintstones-era) were "old" but everything after that like Scooby-Doo (1969-) I didn't perceive as old.

Not a cartoon but Hey Dude and Salute your shorts felt this way. Catch an episode here and there on a Sunday afternoon when you’re not hanging out with friends or playing vidya and get no sense of a plot just one-off episodes

the world of muppets always seemed really sprawling and big and intimating and difficult to piece together. you had the muppets on sesame street, and also as cartoon characters on muppet babies, and also muppet movies, and also TV specials, and then other cartoons like fraggle rock that might have been muppets, but you weren't sure.

Not a cartoon but There was this game show where they played video games and at the end the winner got to do an obstacle course where grabbed as many games as he could and got to keep them. But it was only on at like 9 am on school days. So I'd tell my mom I was sick all the time so I could watch it. Eventually I had to go to the doctor and they put some scope down my throat to see what was wrong with me and I went through with it cause I was in too deep
