no AI in this galaxy. probably only like 1 of every 100 galaxies has it, so there will never be enough time for it to happen to reach us. 1 in 100 doesn't sound like much, but in the scope of the Universe, there are a fuckton of civilizations that have reached hard AI

We are first in this light cone. Life will be increasingly more likely to develop in the eons to come. If the timeline of the universe were a skyscraper, we aren’t even on the first floor of a trillion story building.

It does seem unlikely. It's odd that we find ourselves in the first 1 percent of the universe's currently expected lifetime, but the absence of megaarchitecture or signals makes sense in this light.

it could be that a lot of civilizations in the galaxy have AI, but there are great barriers to reaching the technology needed for INTERSTELLAR TRAVEL. it could look to possible to us with our current knowledge and technology, but once we learn more, we could find it is so wildly expensive or energy inefficient that its not worth even sending robots (or the robots sending themselves), or it even might be impossible.

Time and biological limitations are the only real constraints on interstellar travel. AI would eliminate both of them.

Right now we could build a rocket that could reach another star in 100-200k thousand years. It could just scoop up hydrogen as it goes and move at a snail's pace. That's too much time for people to contemplate, but nbd for an AI. Now consider what a true AI could devise to speed up the journey. You don't need a spaceship to traverse the galaxy; just hop from one star to the next, settle and build for a thousand years, and move on again.

If four such rockets launched from a single AI planet over a few millennia, and four more launched from each destination planet over a few more millennia, and so on, the whole friggin galaxy would be swarming with robots in the blink of an eye on the cosmic timescale.

"Right now we could build a rocket that could reach another star in 100-200k thousand years."

But we haven't done it, right? And we're not even close to doing it. The "why", is the answer to the question. It's a lot easier and "feels" a lot better for intelligent beings to escape the current reality. That's where the resources always go. Intelligent life always ends up hooked up to some Nozick feel-good machine way before it can undertake that kind of space travel.

AI wouldnt necessarily spread. Spreading is based on our biological, evolutionary drive. It can be programmed in but itnis optional.

Also what great filter? There are aliens or at least alien probes on earth and have been for decades. Its been confirmed by nyt fox news etc.

AI would eventually need new supplies of rare metals, etc. And if one AI - anywhere - is programmed to improve upon its own design, then it will go out to find new sources of energy and want to study intricate designs of nature anywhere they find it

AI would have to spread to further secure the continuing performance of its main goals. One of its subroutines will be to ensure its own survival, if only to do the main goals it has otherwise been programmed to do.

As a result, it will do whatever it can to insure its own ongoing ability to perform its main goals and decrease the risk of its own incapacity and consequent inability to perform its main goals.

Cr.

Jews/niggers destroy everything. They are about to destroy technological society forever. (This time, the destruction will be permanent because there will soon be no white people.) We’ll be back to the stone age in a couple thousand years. “AI” will never happen once society begins to fall, which it will soon.

Yes. When it was first articulated we were still in the infancy of understanding the lifespan of the universe, and were marveling at the possibility of 13.5 billion years (or some other term) already having taken place. We werent looking at the matter from the perspective of knowing how the universe is likely to end, and when--trillions and trillions etc of years hence.

I think high. High odds. the universe is only going to grow MORE hospitable for life over the coming 100 billion years, not less.

It's an odd spot we find ourselves in, if true. It means we've been given a chance to expand and grow throughout the entire light-cone, to be the top dog and dominant entities in the entire light cone, IF we can keep our shit together now in this dreamtime.

In that light, it may be that a singleton government is the best and safest way to proceed. If we fuck up and destroy ourselves, we might also have destroyed the very real possibility that our descendants will rival the stars in number and be Godlike.

i disagree. the chances that among all civilizations that produce minds that contemplate the anthropic principle, we'd be among the first, assuming there will be many others, is essentially zero

all future civilizations will be either vastly degraded compared to us or so much more advanced that we cannot begin to comprehend the types of post-anthropic principle concepts they will contemplate

regarding your first paragraph: sure, by pure probabilities its highly highly unlikely that we are among the first. But from the information that we can gather, at least, the evidence, such as it is, supports this unlikely outcome, at least until more information comes along.

I don't understand how you get the conclusions you reach in your second paragraph.

Doesnt seem likely though, from what we know about biochemistry and the way life starts. Life started on earth very early in its existence--about 3.5 billion years ago.

the fact that it developed so quickly suggests that it's not so unusual.
