Many human beings are possessed by an indomitable will to live. They survive years in captivity, tortured by their enemies. Survive terminal illnesses long past the point of medical reason. Endure decades long marriages to third wave feminists and other modern varieties of women. You don’t see how there are a select few who can suspend disbelief and ignore the subtle passage of time in a high-paying job, choosing not to pay attention to everything that’s passing them by and focusing instead on everything they’ll have coming to them when they finally retire?

The same way that there are weirdos with blown out pain receptors who can hold their hands in a bucket of ice water for 20 minutes, there are people in this world who do not seem to care about crushing volumes of tedious work that are subjected to irrational levels of scrutiny in an environment plagued with unnecessary interpersonal conflict. Some even seem to enjoy it!

very few people in BIGLAW make $10m a year, even most equity partners make nothing close to that. And it seems like most firms are 75% non-equity partners nowadays.

no idea, I think I came along at the exact time when the new cogs weren't quite there yet and the old doods who had just coasted through the good ole days were sunning themselves, the guys headed that way looked dead though, just dead, I remember running into one as we passed each other on the escalator on a sunday morning as I was going down for coffee from already being in the office writing some bullshit and he smiled when he saw me and cheefully asked if I could come by his office, since it was a sunday I felt entitled to say "sure I'm just headed down to get some coffee, see you in 20" as he escalated past, I don't see how that man can still be alive

One thing- it helps a lot if you're one of those people who don't need a lot of sleep and naturally have a lot of mental endurance. I used to play WoW a lot, and whenever a new expansion was released, I would always pull all-nighters and end up as one of the first on my server to reach max level. Not as any kind of a goal, just was the natural way I played.

In times when work gets especially busy, I do sometimes find myself working at home til 3 am or so, getting a few hours of sleep and then doing the same thing the next night. Doesn't really affect me as long as it's not too many weeks in a row like that.

1. Biglaw is not a uniform experience.

2. It gets easier when you know the drill. Even fire drills and other emergencies become routine because you’ve seen literally everything. That makes it a lot less stressful.

3. When you are senior you can have other people do stuff for you. That means you are more in control of own time

The area I practice in is so narrow that I'd be totally fucked if it suddenly went away. That's both a good and bad side of biglaw. My firm operates at such volume that they can allow my partner and me to handle this tiny area of the law and become quite expert at it. And now I can do my job largely on cruise control, secure in the knowledge that few other lawyers have expertise in this area.

But if I hadn't done a couple of federal clerkships I'd barely have any general practical legal knowledge at all. I try to stay up to speed on the federal stuff in case all this goes away. And also so I can feel like a lawyer at all instead of some narrow legal technician.
