I inherited him and don't know his exact age, but he's at least 17. Lately he's been fine except he doesn't want to get up and move a lot, and I know it's arthritis because he's got no other health issues. The winter weather must be doing a number on his ass. Right now he looks ready to die but otherwise fine.

The rabies vaccines fuck them up when they are old. They used to be good for 10 years, now vets require them to be vaxxed every THREE years before they will even see the animal. I watched one old cat nosedive within days of getting vaxxed, and I had to put him down just a few weeks later. It was awful.
This one also just got vaxxed for the same fucking reason. I knew if I took him in to be put down, they would refuse to take him if his vaxx records aren't current. I had to get him vaxxed simply so that I can have him put down within the next three years, and a month later he barely moves and needs me to carry him to the food bowl. I miss scooping his shit already.

top-shelf cat food is 180 and cannot be purchased at Walmart. Vets sell it. Give your little guy a good life, faggot. He's 17.

As pet deaths go this is really the best you can hope for. The pet is in no obvious pain. There was no long term illness that ran unchecked. The cat just decided to clock out. I've seen this many times, where the animal just stops eating and lies down. I've also seen owners freak out and try to force feed these pets.
Right now the main thing is he wants to be left alone. He got into the animal carrier, I guess because it's dark and cave-like. He doesn't purr much at all when I pet him, and he has his head facing toward the back of the carrier, so he's not even trying to say hi. His vocalizations are also weak. It's fine though. The cat was always affectionate as fuck, so he's clearly past the "goodbye" stage. When he let me see him drink water, I think that was him saying "goodbye" and now he's just thinking cat thoughts.
