I inherited him and don't know his exact age, but he's at least 17. Lately he's been fine except he doesn't want to get up and move a lot, and I know it's arthritis because he's got no other health issues. The winter weather must be doing a number on his ass. Right now he looks ready to die but otherwise fine.

Cats are pretty resilient. Get some Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplement. Also make sure the cat is getting good food. The cheap shit with wheat is terrible for cats. Also, a heating pad/bed is helpful. Beyond that go to steroids and/or pain meds. Some combo of those things will have the cat back to being a lot more mobile and costs very little.

The rabies vaccines fuck them up when they are old. They used to be good for 10 years, now vets require them to be vaxxed every THREE years before they will even see the animal. I watched one old cat nosedive within days of getting vaxxed, and I had to put him down just a few weeks later. It was awful.

This one also just got vaxxed for the same fucking reason. I knew if I took him in to be put down, they would refuse to take him if his vaxx records aren't current. I had to get him vaxxed simply so that I can have him put down within the next three years, and a month later he barely moves and needs me to carry him to the food bowl. I miss scooping his shit already.

All of them. If you don't have records, they ask you where you got the animal vaccinated, then they call that place to get the records. They won't let you lie. They only require rabies but they try to upsell you on these other shots.

Well this cat was vaxxed right before thanksgiving. I had to do it because I was going out of town, and I didn't want the pet sitter to have any hassle if he needed attention. I texted her like "his vax tag is on the counter, god forbid."

Not even six weeks later, a cat is det. This is now the second time I've seen this happen.

nothing wrong with making sure he keeps his weight under control, that is as important for cats and dogs as it is for humans, but do it slowly and gently, don't put the old dude under physical stress by imposing rapid weight loss (also you would confuse and mentally distress him), just cut back on the rations a little at the margins, and cut back on the non-protein stuff but keep the protein up

Caught him drinking out of the water bowl for the first time ever. For some reason, this cat would only ever drink water when he was 100% sure no one would see or hear him do it. But tonight, for the first time ever he drank water while I was standing right there. He even had his back to me. Sad shit.

Heated pad got him up off his ass a bit today, but he's still circling the drain. He's not getting better unless he loses some of that weight. His old joints aren't used to hauling junk in the trunk, so he's on a restricted diet for the next few days.

As pet deaths go this is really the best you can hope for. The pet is in no obvious pain. There was no long term illness that ran unchecked. The cat just decided to clock out. I've seen this many times, where the animal just stops eating and lies down. I've also seen owners freak out and try to force feed these pets.

Right now the main thing is he wants to be left alone. He got into the animal carrier, I guess because it's dark and cave-like. He doesn't purr much at all when I pet him, and he has his head facing toward the back of the carrier, so he's not even trying to say hi. His vocalizations are also weak. It's fine though. The cat was always affectionate as fuck, so he's clearly past the "goodbye" stage. When he let me see him drink water, I think that was him saying "goodbye" and now he's just thinking cat thoughts.

He got up to drink water, which is 180. Hydration is 99% of keeping cats in good shape. The fact that he has that ambition means he's not in pain and shit. He's also not drinking abnormal amounts or pissing like a diabetic. He's just keeping himself "on fluids" as they say. I put another water bowl close to the pet carrier so he doesn't have to walk so far to get a drink or risk being seen while drinking.

No, but only because he goes psycho every time he sees a vet. It would only make his last moments on earth as stressful as possible. If he were in pain I would deal with it though. The last cat I did had poop fall out of its ass one day, and that's when I knew it was time.

Welp he died. His spirits were high the whole time though. Yesterday he couldn't make it to the litter box so I was fixing to get him done today, but then he just went stiff. I know he was in good spirits because I just brought him some water an hour earlier and watched him drink it. This cat let you know if he was upset about something, but he didn't seem to give a fuck about whatever killed him. He was acting like a boss the whole time

He loved people, especially people who weren't me. I was who he yelled at when he wanted something or had to take a shit. He would howl at me before he took a shit, every time. Then strangers would come over and he would rub up against their legs as soon as they walked in the door. I think he wanted someone else to adopt him.

Anti inflammatory arthritis meds do wonders. You can also put rubber tips on the nails to make it easier to walk on hard surfaces

I always trimmed his claws. But in retrospect I was being optimistic by calling it arthritis, because he started nosediving the day I made this thread and I think I wanted to convince myself it wasn't as bad as it looked. I noticed he wasn't asking for food and he had that distant look.
