In short, the core idea that severe mental disorder could exclude or reduce criminal culpability remained part of German criminal law throughout the Nazi era; the 1933 reforms updated the wording, added diminished responsibility as a formal category, and linked the finding to preventive detention. (This framework is the direct historical predecessor of today’s German §§ 20 and 21 StGB.)
