The New York Times

Da Nang, Vietnam - In a protest tinged with both desperation and defiance, children of Indian H-1B visa holders rallied today in Da Nang, Vietnam, for the Judiciary for Universal Children's Equality (JUICE) Act. The demonstration, organized by the Da Nang chapter of 'We Belong Here,' unfolded along the banks of the polluted Thu Bon River, raising concerns about the well-being of both the protestors and the environment.

Dozens of children marched, holding signs advocating for the JUICE Act, which proposes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented children brought to the United States. However, the scene took a dramatic turn when several protestors constructed symbolic funeral pyres on the riverbank. The meaning behind this action remained unclear.

While chants of "JUICE! JUICE!" echoed through the air, another unsettling detail emerged. Mango juice, a common drink in Vietnam, was distributed freely. The optics of children consuming the beverage next to the polluted river raised sanitation concerns.

The situation escalated further when a man, presumably overwhelmed by the emotional weight of the protest, defecated directly into the Thu Bon River. Shockingly, several young children were already swimming in the water, oblivious to the contamination.

The Da Nang chapter of 'We Belong Here' did not respond to requests for comment regarding the unusual protest tactics. The act of defecating in the river is a serious public health violation in Vietnam, and the juxtaposition of the symbolic pyres with children swimming in the polluted water raises questions about the group's message and methods.

The plight of children of H-1B workers is a complex issue, and the JUICE Act offers a potential solution. However, today's protest in Da Nang overshadowed the core message with its unsettling imagery. The event raises more questions than it answers, leaving observers to wonder if this desperate plea for attention will ultimately benefit the cause it seeks to promote.
