People like paying high rent. They are proud of it. They gloat over the wound. They tell themselves and others that the hurt is proof of living in the "right" place. That they are not one of the many, wandering from cheap place to cheaper. That the air is crisper where it is most expensive to breathe.

In this, rent behaves not unlike the bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild or the tailored Brioni suit: the value is not inherent, but projected. To pay $4,000 a month for a one-bedroom apartment is to make a public offering at the altar of the city's gods — not of necessity, but of prestige. The emptier the wallet, the greater the perceived sacrifice. The more ruinous the cost, the more sacred the ground.

In the end, the city's landlords are not mere sellers of shelter. They are priests administering rites. The lease is a sacrament. The security deposit, a tithe. The eviction notice, a falling from grace.

There is no correcting this by building "more units" or "increasing affordability." You cannot simply add abundance and expect the spell to break. You would have better luck telling an ambitious man that more plastic watches will cure him of wanting a Rolex.

Rent, or Housing, like all modern Veblen goods, is a mirror held up to a dying culture, and the image it reflects is proud, desperate, and exquisitely willing to suffer.

(Note: This post is my opinion and I don't state it as fact)

i'm sure this happens at the absolute top of the rental market, but for the vast majority of rentals, you pay slightly more to get a slightly nicer place in a slightly better location

Ok listen champ you're thinking about this as a Normal Bro. Now consider it from the perspective a Female who aced undergrad OCI. $7000/mo net pay & $3,150/mo rent in some Joke city like Austin is probably considered Normal.

i will absolutely concede that there is a large signaling aspect to housing consumption, which is exacerbated in certain fields like law, medicine, consulting, etc and even beyond that in a world of constant comparison via instagram. all of this is insufficient to qualify as a veblen good because demand does not rise as the price rises - if the price were lower the demand would be significantly higher

Okay what's a word for a pseudo-Veblen good. Remember econ is BS. I think if Rent went down then people who ace OCI would get "the ick" and try to move to the bay area or something.

Sure, like the prestige of having central air instead of a window unit that is also an open invitation to every roach that happens to be passing by. And spoiler alert, a lot of roaches are passing by.
