its graphics and game mechanics (including the ability to view your shots through different 'camera' angles) were a huge hit when it was released in june of 1992, and it was considered one of the most 'photorealistic' games to date:

it sold over half a million copies by the mid-90's, it was allegedly one of the motivating factors behind the decision to make 'myst' look 'real' rather than cartoonish, and it was computer gaming world's game of the year. it also led to an eventual buyout from microsoft.
it was probably close to the importance of doom in terms of getting people to upgrade their PCs to standards like the 486, though more tilted toward the 'working adult' market than the bored teen demographic.
