I think compared to Angelinos who actually lost their homes, Washingtonians are presently more fearful about the future. The former hope to get insurance payouts and fast tracked permits to rebuild (we will see). The latter think their way of life is over.

I do feel bad for them. Yes, there's that 10% of the bureaucracy who were ideologically corrupt, playing games with being the resistance, treating taxpayer money like it was monopoly money and shoveling it at transexual operas in third world, and shielding behind ridiculous security classification laws and secrecy acts and still don't understand what they did was wrong and corrupt. But that's only 10%. The rest of the bureaucracy were plods who did decent basic administrative or research or analytical stuff, even if there may have been an excess of them.

I don't wish unemployment on people and times are going to be tough for many of them. And there is a cruelty in how this is being handled.

I understand the frustration with the bureaucracy and how key players behaved such as USAID or many of the GS-15 ranks but gutting a whole slew of perfectly decent people doing a decent administrative job paying a decent middle class salary makes me queasy. It's not their fault that 50 years of Dem-GOP failure to do anything but kick the can down the road and unaffordable tax cuts+unaffordable spending led to the deficit we have now. Nor is it their fault that a cabal of people in DC had a drunken orgy with ideological spending and programs.

I'm also aware that the beau ideal of doing a long term, pragmatic, case by case performance based and mission based restructuring is also impossible due to the death by a thousand meetings resistance that the bureaucracy and Congress are so good at, making this scorched earth wildfire approach possibly the only way to go about it. But it still makes me queasy and sad for many of them.

nuking japan was horrific and anyone who celebrates all the innocent and ignorant civilians being vaporized is a capricious and hateful person. still, it was the best option to reach a necessary goal. it's a shame that civilians, most of whom probably just wanted to live their life, died because of the intransigence of their government. likewise, it sucks that we can't precisely target things on a case by case basis, but the reason we can't do that is because the bureaucracy we're trying to destroy has entrenched itself so that napalm and mass destruction is the only option available.
