Principal to start early Feb and I'll head to Berlin to start selling for EFM.

Investment banker client wants to set up a film fund.

The band might make it in 25.

Foundation for the film fund is being set up - after this film will have access to cash needed for 3-5 films. Never thought it would ride on Al Pacino...I will encourage him to rest.

Working on a deal for the UK, my upfront fee for that sale will wind up being b/w $50-65k.

Yeah

I'm not sure what the last non-shtick role of his was--it's gotta be like 30 years by now. De Niro mostly just does shtick now too but he still has some great work in him like Silver Linings Playbook

Regardless, it's 180 that one of ARE POASTERS will be working with a Hollywood icon

What's your strategy when you're selling the film? I know a lot of the time the producers basically sell the whole thing off at the film markets beforehand, so you've got downside protection but a capped upside. Is that what you do, or is there more variability to it?

Fuck platforms and streamers, and I've worked with enough majors to know that if I sell to them in a WW deal the film will get a solid release but it will be 7 years before I see any more money from the film (they'll drown us out in fees), and we'll lose control of the film. I'm trying to help save film / cinema, so I prioritise international sales to local distributors who will release in cinemas.

We've pre-sold a few key territories before production to help finance the production budget. Those folks put up an advance or a minimum guarantee that we can bank and take out a production loan against. So the upside is a bit capped in that before we make more money in those territories the distributor has to recoup their advance / MG.

We have 5 or 6 secured sales. Now that I'm closing the last $500k of the budget in equity to finance the rest, we're good, so I'll go to EFM and have more leverage selling out the remaining territories. Buyers will be easier to deal with as their risk is diffused and each secured territory means a more meaningful international marketing campaign which helps them all. So they'll begin to all fall into place and hopefully we have at least 3/4 of the world sold by the US launch. The rest usually sell shortly after.

Will say that, if I could finance a film 100% in cash, I would. I can't do a full negative pickup style deal where Mubi buys me out for $25m after I've already made it because I need to use some of the pre-sales I make as collateral for my production loan.

Al Pacino to star as mafia boss in Captivated

Al Pacino is to play a mafia boss in the new thriller 'Captivated'.The 84-year-old actor is to feature alongside Katie Holmes and Toby Kebbell in the film that is billed as a new take on the infamous kidnapping of John Paul Getty III in 1973.The picture centres on Calabrian mafia boss Saro (played by Kebbell and Pacino at different stages of his life) who kidnaps the grandson of one of the richest men in the world, Jean Paul Getty, and puts his organisation in danger when he develops romantic feelings for his victim's mother (Holmes) during the ransom negotiations.Michael Benaroya, Michael Mammoliti and Manasvi Mamgai are producing the movie for 32Red Entertainment and it is being launched for sales in Cannes by International Film Trust.Mammoliti is the nephew of one of the main kidnappers Saro Mammoliti and has spent years working on the project – even taking issue...

the producer's biggest hurdle was Al Pacino's schedule (he's cranking them out this year apparently) and finding the last $4m of the budget - they came to me for the last bit. Getty was apparently easy, and they didn't have any notes on the script. Amazed me.

Back in their IM Global days we had a few touch points I believe. They make movies every year consistently and seem to make decent money at it - but they've never really made it into the 'real' conversation in Hollywood, so it seems. I think they found their money-making system and are happily sticking with it. No judgement, they consistently get shit done and that says a hell of a lot, but I'm pushing for films with a bit more substance than what they roll out.

Int'l film sales is brutal if your film goes straight to platform/streamer in the US. If I REALLY have to, I can self-release domestically in the US and in the UK so can guarantee it will play on a few hundred screens at least...basically the bare minimum to justify a foreign distributor doing their own theatrical release. I won't take a streamer deal out of principle.

What’s the budget for film? Or all in cost? What does film need to make to be profitable?

Budget between $7.5m - 10m.

Need $15m internationally to breakeven and get into black, full profitability (meaning when US domestic P&A is recouped by the big studio) likely $17m or so.

If theatrical doesn't have a strong showing, I have a dvd/est/home entertainment network I can eke out a few million in profit 12-18 months after initial release from.

Worst worst case scenario by year 3 I can grind away at license deals and force profitability if it's a total bomb (unlikely). Most producers tend to lose rights to their films, and after a few years those films' distribution aren't being managed as closely as they should be and those producers then tend to be distracted by their new projects so don't do anything about it. Since distribution is my thing, I get to make sure that doesn't happen.
