We did tryouts for next year over the last couple weeks and decided on a different club. As a courtesy I let him know because he's a nice guy.

He called and offered to waive all fees if she played for his club. Still said no.

Boys soccer has become insanely competitive. So many kids play and are exposed to high level training from an early age.

It’s probably the most popular girls sport but still fewer girls play than boys. The difference between low level and top level girls is massive. More so than the boys IME. Low level, it’s just a fun social activity. High level it’s super competitive and just as sophisticated as the boys even if they aren’t as athletic.

- higher level training sessions and players

- higher flight

- good conversation with the coach

- flexible training schedule that accommodates other activities

- positive club culture

At this age, I still don't know whether my daughter wants to commit solely to soccer. She has the potential to be a very high level player, but it will ultimately be up to her if she wants to go down that path which will require that she sacrifice other interests. This club will allow her to develop over the next year or 2 without giving up her other interests.

I have no plan beyond her enjoying the game and being challenged so that she'll develop. I prioritize her individual development and having a positive experience far more than being on the highest ranked team possible.

I believe she has the potential and physical gifts to be a D1 player, but ultimately, getting to that level requires an internal drive and dedication that will become apparent around age 13. I think parents who obsess about their kid playing in college don't realize that the kid has to really want it. It's also a huge commitment to play a sport in college. Luckily, she's smart and talented in other areas, so I don't think she'll have to rely on being good at soccer to get into college.

a healthy perspective. congrats on being a good father.

to play devil's advocate, if you prioritize her individual development, doesn't that mean you're trying to push her as far along in the sport as possible? if she's just in it for the love of the game, wouldn't being on a team of girls she enjoys bonding with be the priority?

It's a fair point about obsessing over the kid getting into a college team. Good to know your daughter takes after her mother and isn't a retarded dullard like you

I want her to play for a club that cares more about each player’s individual technical improvement than winning games. I want a coach that will encourage players to be confident on the ball, dribble and take on defenders even if that means mistakes will happen and goals will be conceded. Kids don’t develop if they’re told to pass every time they get the ball. That’s all I meant.

There’s no town team with all her friends. Tbh, none of her friends play soccer at her level. But if that were an option and she said that’s what she wanted to do, that’s the team I’d put her on regardless of the level.

My wife and I agree that our daughter is a much higher quality person than either of us.

The “pass first” mentality is why American soccer isn’t as advanced as it would otherwise be. Good stuff.

Specific to soccer, passing and team tactics can be learned at any age. Individual technical skills cannot. You don't have to have aspirations of playing D1 to want to be good at something that you can enjoy into adulthood. Why would I pay thousands of dollars for my kid to be on a team where they are taught to just kick the ball to the biggest kid? Maybe that results in wins for young children which then helps promote the club to other unsuspecting parents, but it doesn't create a better long-term experience for my kid even if they get fewer U9 trophies.

From a character perspective, I want my kids to have confidence and be comfortable in a leadership role. I don't want to see them sit on the bench or have a limited on-field role and be happy to celebrate their teammates' accomplishments.

Wrong. You want the young kids to collectively improve as soccer players by learning individual skills. Not mindlessly trying to “win” games for ten year olds which is pathetic.

Prob not. I wasn’t really a crafty finesse kind of player.

If it were 1985 or so I’d say he was taking polaroids or videos of her ass to sell. But he can get that anywhere now so congrats

we've got games this weekend. Coach at current club is retaliating because he realized she's not coming back next season. He's been limiting her playing time (in favor of objectively worse players) and forcing her to play exclusively outside back. It's been frustrating and exemplifies some of the nastier unregulated elements of competitive youth soccer.

soccer actually has like positions that ppl compete over? It always just seemed like a bunch of twinks running in circles playing keep away while the clock goes up instead of down

Below U15, no one should make decisions based on their kid playing D1.

After that there are clubs your kid should only play at if they want to play in college (e.g. PDA, Matchfit, STA). They play in national leagues from which college coaches recruit almost exclusively. They train almost every day and travel an insane amount for tournaments and showcases. It's a waste of time for kids who don't love playing soccer more than anything and requires commitment and sacrifice.
