big difference between chatgpt 3.5 and current models. it kind of seemed like a wordcel gimmick at that point. now Gemini 2.5 will write thousands of lines of working code based on a verbal description, highlighting potential problems and suggesting improvements.

While I agree it’s a lot better now, I distinctly remember that gpt 3.5 was the point where large numbers of people suddenly realized that LLMs were now useful tools rather than interesting toys. Just looked it up and my signup email with OpenAI was in early December 2022.

there are a couple Georgia Tech kids that are working on an AI "legal assistant" that use me for some consulting.

They came in the other day to show off their latest work - there was some AI screen on a website that they run. You literally just talked to your computer to ask it to do shit for you, and it would, like fucking star trek. Not even typing in, voice activated. It wrote a demand letter just by asking it

There are people out there that use it and claim it’s just copying and pasting from the web. I think there various reasons why people think it’s overhyped. Technology often is (remember 3d printing)? So they use a lazy narrative that this must be too. I think there are also a large number of people who feel diminished when seeing AI rapidly eat up large fractions of human capabilities. I mean obviously if you took the median college grad, you could never train them to have the reading comprehension of a top model, or have the coding abilities of one, or instantly translate between every language, or generate an image in any art style. They can’t cope with the realization that we are slightly evolved primates and that machines doing matrix multiplications are going to replicate all human capabilities soon. Most people are not bullet biters and will cling to romantic notions of human value even when it’s readily apparent to anyone who is intellectually honest that we are connectionist robots that are about to be transcended by machines.

Yeah, the whole “vibe coding” trend is an obvious example of this. People are just sitting around and asking Cursor to do everything for them because the models are good enough for that. They aren’t bothering to debug shit - just feed the error back into the model and ask it to solve the problems itself and paste the new code.

The thing the AI skeptics don’t get is that there doesn’t need to be a “killer app”. This IS the product. A little guy in your computer who will talk to you all day and help you through whatever issue and be a sounding board and generally provide reliable information (albeit treat with caution). It’s fucking insane and people are quickly becoming addicted to it/using as primary info source for everything.
