I think there various reasons why people think it’s overhyped. Technology often is (remember 3d printing)? So they use a lazy narrative that this must be too. I think there are also a large number of people who feel diminished when seeing AI rapidly eat up large fractions of human capabilities. I mean obviously if you took the median college grad, you could never train them to have the reading comprehension of a top model, or have the coding abilities of one, or instantly translate between every language, or generate an image in any art style.
