Nationally, Rs did win with a 3% lead over Ds when all votes were counted, but it was how the votes broke down on a district by district basis that mattered for the house and senate. The Reps overperformed safe seats but lost the close seats. The Rs also had abysmally bad candidates that year. Moronic Herschel Walker never had a real lead in his senate election, it was always neck to neck with Warnock maintaining a slightly edge, and Warnock won. The polls were right.

Same with AZ. Blake Masters never had a lead in polls. Kari Walker was closer in the gov election but she was also legit crazy and it was incredibly tight just as the polls said it would be.

PA had an election where many people didn't like either candidate for different reasons, but the R candidate was never leading.

Just as the Rs saw a red wave despite polls in all the swing senate seats telling them it was neck to neck with the R candidate slightly behind, the Ds also misread the outcome, winning a sequence of very tight senate elections and picking up seats in the house, as a blowout victory and mandate despite that nationally the Rs won more votes than the Ds.
