Realistically, the only hope China has of "invading" Taiwan is either a naval blockade or flattening the entire island with cruise missiles. Either way TSMC gets shut down, which will royally piss off the entire planet, including whatever nominal allies China has. Even if the U.S. doesn't actually defend Taiwan directly, there is no way that the benefit would justify the economic cost. I'm fairly confident that China just wants to maintain a credible threat of invasion to keep the pro-independence movement in check. |
