I painstakingly had gpt and Claude separately review a hostile client situation and draft a proposed email. Claude was more breezy and casual and GPT was robotically professional.

Had Gemini Pro 2.5 look at both drafts and pick one, it said they're both shitty and absolutely DO NOT SEND EITHER. Gave me a huge list of bulleted feedback and cited actual bar ethics / rules. I told it to just write the damn thing itself from scratch

Then I showed the Gemini draft to Claude and GPT and both were like "oh yeah that's way better than mine"

If all you need is draft language, you can run Gemma on a $200 graphics card and get equally good results. It's just a quantized version of Gemini, and quantization doesn't really affect it's writing ability

For writing shitlaw motions and pleadings it's fine. I'm on Gemma3 12b, but Gemma2 was good enough. And no, Google didn't train two totally different LLMs but only commercialize one of them. lmao they both got trained on Google's in-house legal docs

It’s fucking awesome at it. Been paying for Claude too but it beats Claude pretty regularly and sometimes just blows everything else out of the water. Got best overall on BigLaw Bench recently.

It’s definitely made paralegals obsolete. And maybe young associates too. Someone still has to show up in court. Would suck being fresh out of law school right now. AI will make a lot of people rethink their whole staffing situation. The ladder has been yanked up

This is it. AI operates at like a 3rd year level now. You are always going to need senior associates and partners to review its work. The difference is that you need to spend a few mins prompting it and you have a work product that could take a junior or paralegal multiple days to complete. Not sure how this is going to play out but AI Will definitely fuck up junior/admin staffing and the hourly billing model.

did you see the recent article about the SCOTUS litigator who used AI to mock out a full oral argument using a sim of his own voice? will we ever reach the point where a lawyer can vouch to the court that he trained AI to make his oral arguments for him?

No that’s 180. I use it to argue with me in text and it’s really helpful. It scolded me the other day when I asked it about some different options in a case. It was like “absolutely don’t even consider this one thing as an option it’s the dumbest possible thing you could do” and then wrote a long article about why and made a chart of all the choices I had and the different outcomes at various stages. It’s really useful at telling you what not to do and I think a lot of people ignore this capability
