Shane is from the divided generation of American culture where half the country is sick of PC woke nonsense and the other half insists on it. Gillis is probably the top tier of his generation and the way he pulls it off is by bringing Trump era MAGA humor to the masses without crossing the line over into the alt right. Like his best friend has a black wife so he has one foot in with the progressive world and one foot in with rural Pennsylvania. Sam Hyde can make TND content and beg for scraps on his inscrutable third party website but Shane can go right up to the line and he knows where it is. He can cross it or not but his talent is remaining in control. He has ambiguity and plausible deniability but can still say shit the everyman is thinking about call out the hall monitors without devolving into a political rant like Anthony Cumia or Adam Carrolla. It takes a tremendous amount of talent to pull this off, to be the wildest white guy on SNL but not get written up in the New Yorker as some kind of abhorrent dissident to write off.
As to why the room isn't dying it's unfunny athletes and a very lib audience. This is a hostile crowd but it would be killing it anywhere else. |

There's actually an irony there because a lot of Black athletes these days have all these political angles (think Kyrie and his association with Kanye) and such and then people say, "Just shut up and play basketball" and they get all mad and rant about how they care more about The Revolution than being a great basketman. But Shane actually does shut up and tell jokes which is why it works.
Meanwhile, if you tune into Carolla this guy has so many opinions about the way the city of Los Angeles ought to fill in the potholes it's like dude - drop the act and just run for mayor at this point lol.
We could use a lot more comedians who are just there to tell jokes, a lot more niggerballers who just put the ball in the cup. You're never going to "win" the culture war or solve every societal ill. If you want to be Charlie Kirk, go all in. But I agree, separate politics from culture. Patrice had a great insight about this when he told a megashrew, "I know funny." Things are funny just because their funny. Movies are cool because they're cool. No one really knows how or why that magic happens (if they did, every movie/song/book would be genius, and they're not). But just stick to the art/game/what have you. We can all squabble about the politics online later. |
