Lawler is a legend in wrestling. But if we are going with a top 4 I would exclude him (and a bunch of others) because they never truly carried a promotion.

Flair, Hogan, Stone Cold, The Rock

there is no room whatsoever for debate on these four.

if you want to make top 10 list, there are 20-30 guys who could all make a legitimate case for one of the 5-10 spots. but those top 4 are clearly on a different level from the others. go down to the next tier and it's much harder because ranking guys like sting, foley, taker, hitman, razor, warrior, hbk, macho, etc. is a lot more subjective.

what is the debate? he was massively over as a face and a heel, wrestled for 40 years as a main-eventer, great worker, great on the mic, 15 times the world champion, put people over and made stars time and time again without losing an ounce of heat. No matter how badly he was booked, all he had to do was get coked up and scream "I'M RIC FLAIR" and start rifling gucci loafers into the crowd and he was instantly back on top of the card.

In fact, if I'm picking my #1 of those four guys, it's Flair all the way because he's the only one that was unselfish and gave back more to the business than he got from it. The other three were all dependent on superman booking to some extent, but Flair was more talented and has by far the longest run and best body of work.

he did most of his work in Hulk Hogan's shadow. He wasn't even the face of wCw. sting and Bill (((Goldberg))), Hogan, Nash et al were all key players in the rise of wcw. Flair and Dusty in the NWA is legendary, but I'm not sure its enough to vault him to #1 all time. I respect it though. He was before my time and during my time he wasn't THE GUY. THE GUYS in my time were Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold, Rock, John cena, and now Roman Reigns

what are you talking about with the "rise of wcw"? all of those guys were from a period of 2-3 years and wcw went out of business soon after that. flair was the face of the company for the vast majority of its existence.

it's nowhere close. in high school, lots of kids were wearing stone cold, NWO, and DX shirts. We were doing rock bottoms, peoples elbows, and stunners to each other during football practice. Highly doubt it's socially acceptable today to show up to school in a roman reigns t-shirt and anyone who does is probably in some weird clique, not the mainstream jocks and cool kids like the 90s.

There has NEVER been someone who dominated his era by such a wide margin in terms of match quality. Nobody else with even half as big of a gap.

But he would not be credible against Hogan, Austin, Rock, or Flair, so you can't put him on Mount Rushmore.

I'm not the biggest fan of Osprey's in ring style, but, tbf, I'm only familiar with select AEW matches of his, and the most recent was a pretty lame match imo with Ricochet.

If wrestlers only,

Hulk Hogan

The Rock

Stone Cold Steve Austin

John Cena

Easy three: Flair, Hogan, Austin

The last one is tough. I'd give it to the Rock, but you can also make the case for Sammartino, Andre, Dusty, or the Undertaker.

If we loosen up the standards, the fourth one could be Vince.

Guys like Bret, Shawn, Savage, HHH, etc. are legends, but not Mt. Rushmore-caliber.

In ring performers only -- vince would be a benjamin franklin type figure when it comes to pro wrestling... its all very subjective, but I'm basing my Mt. Rushmore on drawing power (minus ultimate warrior, that spot really should be hulk hogan and I'll change that right now)

The wrestling in the ring is such a small part of wrestling that it's hilarious

seeing lots of flair, he was 180 and of course had mainstream appeal, but he never transcended like Hogan, Austin, and Rock.

disagree

and I love the Rock, especially his recent work, but he's terribly overrated in this thread and in general. at least Undertaker, Sting, Shawn, and Bret are in front of him. could even make an argument for HHH or Cena

Hogan was a pretty terrible in-ring performer and an absolute cancer outside the ring but it's obviously undeniable that he's on Mt. Rushmore.

that's something common to rock and stone cold. both great sellers. also both great at throwing a punch and just making basic moves in general look believable. and generally speaking, i'd rather watch jacked, charismatic dudes have a believable fight than see some flippy shit.

that also explains part of why i like ospreay. he has more intensity and is more believable than the other flippy wrestlers. and he's also been helped by other great workers like omega who can sell his moves so well that they look career threatening. it really makes a match when you can have a finish like this:

ngl, that was 180, but omega did the heavy lifting there not literally but in taking and selling that finisher

can you concede that it's pretty disrespectful and inaccurate to call ospreay a "white ricochet"? both ospreay and omega wrestle their matches like legit athletic contests and have movesets that look like they are inflicting actual injury on the opponent. ricochet is just a circus acrobat. there is really no comparing the style and psychology.

and yeah, ospreay needs omega to do that move, but somehow ospreay does tons of dangerous looking shit to tons of people and manages not to hurt them, to the point that it's so convincing that they can run injury angles off of it (like with bryan).

yeah, I'll walk that back. I'll watch more AEW, that entire roster can go, but, they're sorely missing in the character and story development and I can't stand the young bucks.
