- max out ur $23,000k contributions to ur 401k with pre-tax $$$
- contribute $46,000k in AFTER-TAX $$$ to ur 401k
- mega back door: roll that after tax money into a Roth IRA, where it grows tax free, then when ur old, you get that money without paying taxes on the withdrawals
- that rollover is allowed without paying penalties or anything, but you have to pay taxes on any earnings on the $46,000k while it's in ur 401k
Not all plans allow for the mega back door.

- after tax contributions are allowed up to IRS limits. But not all employers allow for the "in service rollover" that is needed to go from after tax 401k to Roth IRA.
- I believe 401k contributions must come from ur employment income, but yes I do it all at once every year from bonus paid in March. I prefer that because then I can roll it all and be done ... the 401k administrator always has BS fees per transaction, and I don't want earnings on the taxable 401k because you owe taxes on those earnings)
Administratively very simple.
It's a very 180 savings tool, I've done it for several years and wish I started earlier.
