Lightning doesn't kill all fish because the electrical current mainly spreads out along the water's surface, not down into the depths. Fish that are deep enough to be below the surface remain unaffected, while only those very close to the surface are at risk of being harmed. This is because water's conductivity causes the electricity to travel horizontally rather than penetrate deeply.

Fresh water, sure because it's very dense. But ocean water is significantly less dense, so the electrons should be able to penetrate deep

Edit I got it backwards fresh water is less dense

Obviously I’m being a little rhetorical it hasn’t been a million times but it’s a well known phenomenon up here. We even have a phrase for it: “Lightning Dead” lakes. It can take years to reboot and restore a lake after a major lightning strike especially if it cascades through an underwater stump system. In those interim years, the lake is a real waste land.

And you weren't fudging the number of fish deaths even a little bit by including batrachians?

I think this thread demonstrates that a combination of electrical spread on the surface of the water, electrophoric activity, protective slime, and carefully timed jumps keeps the fish very much alive during lightning strikes.

it's not enough juice. that's like trying to power an entire city with an extension cord plugged into a home wall outlet. the power dissipates in accordance with current/voltage/time/area/etc. you would need a massive jolt of power to remain strong enough to kill stuff spread throughout a large body of water.

A lightning strike consists of one or more short duration electrical pulses. The fourier transform of a lightning pulse will show that much of the energy consists of high frequency alternating current. This is why when lightning strikes you hear static on an analog a.m. radio. In a conductor alternating current tends to flow on the surface in proportion to the frequency of the current and the electrical conductivity of the conductor. This is called skin effect. Salt water is much more conductive than fresh water, so the electric field around a strike will be more intense toward the surface and will spread out radially from the strike point. In the case of a fresh water strike, the penetration below the surface will be greater and the spread more resembles a sphere than a disk. If you are floating in the water the current that will flow through you depends upon the electric field gradient across your body. In most cases the field gradient will not be enough to hurt you if you are more than 20 or so feet away. However, if you are standing, the field gradient will be relative to ground, so the lethal distance will be greater. Fish aren't usually in contact with the ground, though. However, electricity is not the only problem. Lightning generates an intense sound wave (thunder). Close in it can be deadly or at least deafening - maybe 250 db, which is like a bomb - think of a stick of dynamite going off. Underwater the concussion can be deadly to fish at a much greater distance than the electrical effect. Maybe 5-10 times great. In addition, the lightning will flash boil water at the impact point, so if you are too close you can be cooked.

For all the non engineers on the bort the Fourier transform just converts time domain into frequency domain. Maybe that doesn't make any sense either. It's just one of those things you learn in engineering and math classes. It's tedious to calculate, so you just have a computer or instrument do it for you so it becomes a black box. It is one of the most useful tools in signal and image processing, but it's also used in many other ways.
