A lot of modern metal has the same sounding guitar tones, drums all sound the same, not many exciting vocalists and they alap all sound the same. Am I really a fan if I only like the older shit, up to Pantera or so?
Modern metal seems like modern AAA Gaming to me IMO, just the Same

what kind of stuff are you referring to?
I think the road has forked into a few different paths, but you're not wrong.
The center of the problem is there aren't any riffs, so everything is a generic template of whatever that subgenre sounds like.

Metal is a large international scene. There's been some decent stuff since the '00s, but the age of big names & radio/television play is over.
Part of musical interest is related to one's age as well. It's natural to latch on to the familiar and scorn anything new or different.
