Still love King, he's a huge influence on my writing and reading
I don't have Max but if I get it I will check it out. |

More atmospheric/creeping dread/dark than truly "scary" in any way, but really a fantastic series. Great acting.
Every couple years I sub to Max at a promo rate for a couple months, binge what I want to watch, then cancel once the promo runs out. This series is 10 episodes and I got through them in two days. |

I need to see both--definitely Legend of Hell House. I read the book and loved it, although I assume the movie is tamer on the perverse sexuality aspect.

It's horrific, even if some of the science behind it is a bit overblown w/r/t nuclear winter.
The hospital sequence is truly harrowing.
For a really bad time, I also recommend The War Game which is a 1965 mockumentary in a similar vein, although it plays it a little less straight and with more angry dark humor

TBH the description makes me think of The Dark and the Wicked which I really did not care for*, but this looks good.
*I still think it's worth a watch, I just don't like dour, sour horror that thinks it's being cruel when it feels more motivationless--and I get 'motivationless' is the point but the movie should have leaned more into either a) they really don't deserve this and it's really horrible or, more intriguingly, b) they actually DO deserve this, even if they don't, really.

the direction and editing of the scene when the chick winds up in the 'trophy room' is amazing visual storytelling
the soundtrack is just incredible
it's mesmerizing in a way no other horror movie is for me; it always leaves me feeling shaken but it doesn't actually ruin my day |

manages to feel transgressive but not gratuitous which is a strength of barker's that i think puts his graphic and provocative content head and shoulders above many others who followed him.
amazingly i have yet to actually read the source material--for all my professed love of barker it's largely on the strength of having read 5/6ths of the Books of Blood + Damnation Game.
i also prefer the grandeur of the christopher young score to the stuff barker originally commissioned from coil

I think by the end they were just thinking what can we do to make this popular with the youth crowd - I know, just have all the stuff pop out at her one after another. They definitely leaned into the horror formula. Would have been more interesting to have a dramatic ending with more confrontation and character's making choices.
I think its success rides on the simplicity of the story. You could lay out the entire plot in one paragraph or less. It's not convoluted or deep with lots of plot points (sort of the opposite of a J.J. Abrams Star Wars disaster). This makes the characters more vivid and really launches the cenobites as classic horror villains. |
