When it broke out in the early 2000s, they were in one single narrow business. One service based on one product. Now that service doesn't exist and the company is all in on a service that didn't exist 20 years ago. Has there ever been a major corporation that just completely morphed into something else (and lead the industry in both things) in so short a time?

Amazon never abandoned its original business, though. It started as an online book retailer, and it's still an online book retailer - the biggest one by far.

I think there was a streaming service that did this. They bought physical DVDs and only let one person stream each DVD at a time. I believe they were shut down because the software that you need to use to rip DVDs breaks the DVD’s encryption in violation of the DMCA.

The transition from dvd rental=>streaming other studio's content=>streaming their own content was step by step and entirely logical at the time.

If you want to talk about an unesxpected turn of business, look at Amazon. They started as a online bookseller and, if you're going by profits, now they are a cloud computing company.

I have been using the service since they did dvd rental and I remember when they made the switch to streaming (I think they had something called Netflix Blue for the dvd biz after that switch). I was livid and swore it would never work. Lol, no wonder I am poor.

Also, the rental biz WAS better in a lot of ways. The selection of movies was >>>>>>>> what they stream.

Yeah they had everything. There's virtually no way to get movies on first-run video release now, via subscription. Videos still come for sale and rent a few months before they drop on streaming services, typically.

It wasn’t that much of a transformation. They had contracts with all the big studios and when the studios realized streaming was cheaper than producing DVDs they told Netflix hey we’ll still honor our contracts with you but it will save us both money if we switch to this streaming thing

I don’t think this is true. I think part of the early struggle was getting studios to let their content stream. I think they were concerned about piracy, the quality of streaming, and about boomers being able to figure out how to plug a box into Ethernet and connect it to their TV. It took quite a while before Netflix was built into every TV.

Not really. Originally Netflix was like a massive video store. You could rent anything. Modern Netflix is basically a large premium cable channel that streams; maybe a few channels combined. 95% of movies that the average person might want to rent on a given day aren't available there.

Their model for providing/curating content has changed completely. I said this above, but you used to be able get virtually anything ever published on DVD from them. Now, there's no streaming equivalent to what they provided, anywhere.

You can rent movies online elsewhere, but not on subscription.

mostly true. they were technically separate entities. the kaiser company was the shipbuilding industrialist and henry kaiser formed the permanente foundation to handle inhouse medical needs. when ww2 ended the shipyards emptied out and the permanente foundation lost 2/3 of its customer/user base, so kaiser decided to pivot and opened permanente up to the general public. he got a lot of other unions on board and the company was basically off to the races.

Netflix had barely over a 1B market cap when it launched streaming, which was not a small company at the time, but was a tiny speck compared to 5-7 years later as streaming took hold. Blockbuster had a second chance to merge with Netflix right around the same time, and the CEO wanted to do the deal, but the Icahn got in the stock and fucked it all up and forced the CEO out. If the boomers who ran Blockbuster weren’t utter retards they would have and should have dominated streaming and scaled it way too fast for the studios to launch their own competing services.
