so they had all those firearms but were easily ambushed and taken down by a police raid. as much as survivalists would like to pretend otherwise, that is GENERALLY what happens. if the feds want to hit you, you take the hit. nothing you can really do about it. david koresh tried... and ended up a pile of cinders.

a lot of those are local/low-intensity cop actions that run into unexpected trouble.

if a tactical team from the feds goes in there with the expectation that you'll fight back, they go in very heavy and don't give you much of a chance to do much of anything.

that doesn't really argue against having guns, a low level cop raid is far more likely to start with

hell, the ruby ridge doods were going at it with the FBI, the Marshalls and special forces doods and they popped one

the ruby ridge raid didn't even involve helicopter support or a tactical entry team.

guns are fine, but the point is, the notion that civilian firearms will somehow "keep the government in line" is just not evident at all from actual police conduct in america. if they are scared of civilian firepower and are thus constrained in their actions, it really doesn't show.

on an individual level sure, but truly widespread problems potentially free up citizens to start popping sheriffs and stuff, swat doesn't really do much and the FBI can only handle a few incidences at once

the fact that over a long enough time frame social breakdown of some sort is pretty much guaranteed, would you want to be in Detroit right now without a gun? police response time in the fucking city, which is filled with poor ass desperate people, is over ten minutes

one decent natural disaster, or any number of other scenarios, is perfectly likely and if not confined to a small enough area can result in not so good stuff, do you think cops were confiscating guns during Katrina because they were doing such a great job maintaining the social order?

This is just shitty circular reasoning. "I think X is going to happen because X is going to happen." You can't point to any actual facts that would actually lead you to conclude that some dork living in Bowling Green, OH is reasonably likely to witness compete social and political meltdown in his lifetime, or his children's lifetime, or even his grandchildren's lifetime.

There have been civilizations that have lasted for thousands of years without any breakdown in the social order.

Furthermore, when there have been collapses there have been factors that caused then. They weren't just spontaneous events.

In order to argue that the USA in the 21st century is headed for any kind of collapse, you have to show that at least some of those factors are present. You haven't done that.

outside of the Pax Romana I think you're stretching it, up until very recently the odds of being caught up in some sort of warfare were very high pretty much everywhere, as I said, I'm not talking full on collapse of civilization, but short term breakdowns are not that rare, not fifty years ago the entire European continent, most of asia, and the civilized parts of Africa went through it

and droughts, famines, and plagues were pretty common, we've certainly increased out ability to fight that but the idea that we're perfectly safe is silly and given the consequences it isn't irrational to take even a small chance pretty seriously

why would it need to be likely to occur in your lifetime, just you and your kids alone will cover over a century, one cannot forecast at all that far off and the consequences are severe enough that you don't need to require a preponderance of the evidence like some aspie queer to act

periods of peace lasting over a century are relatively rare, and once again, you're using "likely" for no reason, why would your house be likely to burn down?

This is just sophistry. Was WWII a good time to be a survivalist in Ohio just because that was not a "period of peace?"

oh indeed, but it was a great time to be one in about half the world, how do you not understand that catastrophic events, while not super likely in the near term, are ultimately a part of life that should be planned for, that's why nations bother to have a standing army or you have a fire extinguisher

Was it even a great time to be one in Germany or France or a Jewish ghetto in Poland? I'm not sure it would have helped there.

South Africa seems like a good country to look at for social breakdown and the effectiveness of being armed. It appears that being well armed has helped some of the whites there.

Depends on what you mean by "survivalist". These guys? yea. But the term is typically used in the context of people preparing for when shit hits the fan. In which case the gov't aint going to be spending the time going after some loner in the woods.

That's consistent with the notion that they're prepared to fight back if the feds come and bother them about anything. They're not going to pause and say "hmm, is this just an isolated incident or is this part of a broader attempt to disarm the entire population?"

of course not, but that doesn't mean they don't recognize the distinction and that it probably affects their outcome, they aren't going to allow their guns to be taken, or so they say, but they are obv not prepared sufficiently to take on the navy seals, but in a situation where it isn't the navy seals but just whatever local rednecks were in their area and got the memo to start the collecting they're probably in decent shape

you seem to be saying they're irrational just because they aren't 100% assured of victory and in fact would probably lose in most instances, that doesn't really make sense

It's not just "not certain to work," it's pretty much certain to fail. If you kill a cop trying to arrest you or search your home, the government isn't going to just back off.

but you killed the cop, that's a victory of sorts and if enough get got you've certainly accomplished something

and once again, the likelihood of this certainly would affect any sort of plans for the kind of nationwide confiscation they're worried about, there is a reason gun control advocates are really hesitant to talk about confiscation and it isn't because they don't want to remove guns, these guys are, day to day, actually affecting how we talk about policy

No, I'm evaluating the likely consequences of a certain course of action against its stated purpose. If you say "I'm going to defend against gov't tyranny," and gov't kills you, you've failed to accomplish your stated objective.

You seem to think it's enough to kill a few cops before you go down in a hail of bullets, but when I survey the justifications put forth by 2nd amendment advocates, killing cops just for the sake of killing cops doesn't seem to be a common one.

and getting killed imposes a cost on the government, namely having to kill a couple thousand citizens is really bad pr and can potentially jump start backlash

gun control proponents are, in op-eds and in private, very clearly in favor of removing a lot if not all guns from private hands, Feinstein would 100% confiscate AR-15's if she could, but even she won't come out and say that, in part that's a reflection of the uncertainty as to how problematic crazy gun owners would be, having swat teams kill a few thousand crazies would be political suicide

So when members of congress voted down the gun control bill, you think it was because they were worried that cops get shot enforcing the law? Because I don't recall that issue being raised during any of the debates over that legislation.
