This place wasn't even a state until the 1950s but the Navy had been operating out of there for several decades already. That was the arrangement from the outset - we had to provide all these services to these islands all of a sudden, and waste removal was just one.
Since then Hawaii has come up with all kinds of measures for dealing with waste, many ignored by locals in the rural towns. But the Navy has never not been there in a pinch to help out. Shipping to Asia makes the most sense except that the ships have to sail to Hawaii empty, or with shitloads of something Hawaiians need to buy |
