furthermore just off of a cursory and topical examination it tracks with local developments. neighborhoods throughout the state that were formerly crime ridden shitholes have now stabilized, some from gentrification, some from routine cultural change

there is just not that much violent physical crime in the states when you get away from shock news television

violent crime is fundamentally a solved problem, and the refusal of the state to implement those solutions damns the state as an agent of popular will or as the guardian of any other fanciful multi-order construct of national/social/etc. ensoulment (given that violent crime is unpopular and is an obvious evil).

i'd wager that it had less to do with lax law enforcement---which as i recall, was quite strict especially in many lower income areas during those years, and more to do with the cultural and social effects stemming from the pandemic/response and isolation

i agree with some of the second bit and think that the worst offenders such as types of seven time murder recidivists you see on the news from time to time should have an example made out of them with a swift and speedy execution
